Heat pumps that carry an Adirondack winter
Most of the North Country has no natural gas. Homes from Ticonderoga to Lake Placid heat with fuel oil, propane, wood or electric baseboard, and every one of those costs more per unit of heat than a Mitsubishi H2i system running on NYSEG or National Grid electricity. The catch is the cold: a conventional heat pump loses most of its output below 20°F. Hyper-Heating INVERTER® delivers 100% of its rated heating capacity at 5°F and keeps operating to -13°F — and H2i Plus / FS-series models keep going down to -22°F. That covers a Ticonderoga design day with margin, and we design Lake Placid and Saranac Lake systems around their -20°F to -30°F nights.
A heat pump is only as good as its sizing and its install. Mitsubishi can deny warranty claims on systems sized off square footage or charged by guesswork, so we don't do either. We measure the house, run the load calculation, design the zones, and install to Mitsubishi factory spec every time. Here is what our install standard includes and why our estimate is usually not the cheapest one you'll get.

Single-zone, multi-zone, whole-home or ducted
Single-zone
One outdoor unit, one indoor unit. The addition the furnace never reached, the camp, the loft, the bedroom over the garage, or the first step off propane. Add cooling for the summer at the same time.
Ductless mini-splits →Multi-zone
One H2i outdoor unit running two to eight indoor units, each with its own thermostat. Heat the rooms you live in, set back the ones you don't. The most common design for 1800s village homes with no ducts.
Multi-zone outdoor units →Whole-home
Your oil or propane system decommissioned and replaced, which puts you in the highest NYS Clean Heat rebate tier. Usually a mix of ductless heads and a ducted air handler.
Whole-home conversions →Ducted
A Mitsubishi SVZ or PVA air handler on your existing ductwork for a furnace-style install with nothing on the walls. Pairs with ductless heads for rooms the ducts miss.
Ducted air handlers →Why we size from a load calculation, not square footage
Two 1,800-square-foot homes in Essex County can need very different equipment. A 2005 build with spray foam in Westport and an 1870 farmhouse with balloon framing in Crown Point might be 30,000 BTU apart on a -10°F night. Our comfort consultants measure every room, log insulation, windows, orientation and air leakage, and pull your last heating season's fuel use. The load calculation tells us the outdoor unit capacity you actually need at design temperature and how to split it into zones.
- Oversized systems short-cycle, cost more to buy and dehumidify poorly in July.
- Undersized systems run flat out, miss setpoint on the coldest nights, and burn the warranty goodwill you paid for.
- Correct sizing is also what NYS Clean Heat and Efficiency Vermont require for the top rebate tiers.

What's included in every Adirondack Heat Pumps installation
Stand or pad, never on the ground
Outdoor units go on a wall bracket or a raised stand on a gravel pad so they sit above drifting snow and spring melt. Ice and debris never block the coil.
Line hide and clean routing
Refrigerant lines and control wiring run in slim-duct covers matched to your trim. No bare insulation on your siding, no PVC zip-tied to the wall.
Drain pan heater and surge protection
Base pan heaters keep defrost water from freezing into a block of ice under the coil. A surge protector shields the inverter board from the power blips that come with North Country storms.
Nitrogen pressure test, deep vacuum, weighed charge
Every line set is pressure-tested, pulled to a measured vacuum and charged by weight to the line length. Guessing at refrigerant is the most common reason heat pumps underperform.
Commissioning and app setup
We verify charge, airflow and control settings, register your Mitsubishi warranty, and set up the Mitsubishi Comfort app or kumo cloud on your phone before we leave.
Rebate paperwork, done for you
We file your NYS Clean Heat (NYSEG or National Grid) or Efficiency Vermont application and tell you the exact amount at the estimate. No chasing forms after the install.
What a conversion looks like in a North Country home
The typical call we get is from a homeowner in Ticonderoga, Schroon Lake or Port Henry who just paid for another propane fill or oil delivery and wants to know if a heat pump can really replace it. The honest answer is yes, when the system is designed for it. Here's how we approach the three common starting points:
- Oil or propane furnace with ductwork — a Mitsubishi air handler replaces the furnace on the existing ducts, often with a ductless head or two for the rooms the ducts never served well.
- Boiler with baseboard or radiators, no ducts — a multi-zone ductless system: wall units in living areas and bedrooms, a floor-mounted unit where a radiator used to be, a one-way cassette in a hallway ceiling.
- Electric baseboard — the easiest win. Baseboard makes one unit of heat per unit of electricity; a Mitsubishi H2i averages roughly three. The electric service is usually already sized for it.
Decommissioning the fossil-fuel system puts you in the highest NYS Clean Heat tier. Keeping it as backup is allowed in some tiers and still earns a rebate. We'll show you both numbers side by side at the estimate. See whole-home conversions and the current rebate programs.

What a Mitsubishi heat pump costs in the North Country
What drives the number
Zone count, indoor unit style, line-set length, stand versus bracket, electrical work, and whether you decommission the old system for the top rebate tier. Single-zone systems start in the low five figures installed before rebates; whole-home systems are a larger investment offset by the top rebate tier and 0% financing.
Pricing guide →Run the numbers first
Our free two-minute calculator takes your ZIP, home size and what you pay for oil, propane or electric heat and shows what three Mitsubishi options would cost to run instead. Finish it before your estimate and get $250 off your install.
Calculate my savings →0% for 18 months
Qualified buyers can finance through Synchrony at 0% interest for 18 months, so the system can cash-flow against the fuel bills it replaces.
Financing →Warranty, guarantee and care
As a Diamond Contractor ELITE we register your Mitsubishi equipment for the 12-year parts warranty, and our Adirondack Shield Elite Care Plan adds 12 years of labor, $0 repairs, bi-annual maintenance and 24-hour priority service from $28 a month on a single-zone system. On top of that, every qualifying install carries our 180-Day Comfort Guarantee: if the system doesn't hold the temperatures we designed it for, we come back and make it right at our cost.
Service is local. Our office and showroom are at 15 Montcalm Street in Ticonderoga, our North Zone consultant can diagnose most control issues remotely through the Comfort app, and our techs repair and maintain what we install — we don't subcontract winter calls.

Heat pump installation questions from North Country homeowners
Do heat pumps really work at -20°F in Lake Placid or Saranac Lake?
Yes, when they are the right heat pump. Mitsubishi Hyper-Heating INVERTER (H2i) units deliver 100% of rated heating capacity at 5°F and keep running to -13°F; H2i Plus and FS-series models operate down to -22°F. For the High Peaks we size to the local design temperature and, for homes that see -25°F or colder, we talk through a backup heat plan at the estimate rather than promising something the equipment can't do.
How much does a Mitsubishi heat pump cost installed?
It depends on the number of zones, indoor unit styles, line-set length, mounting and electrical work. Single-zone systems start in the low five figures installed before rebates; multi-zone and whole-home systems are a larger investment that the top NYS Clean Heat rebate tier and 18-month 0% financing offset. We give a written, itemized price at the free in-home estimate, never over the phone.
Can a heat pump replace my oil or propane furnace entirely?
Yes. A whole-home Mitsubishi system sized from a load calculation can carry the entire house, and decommissioning the oil or propane system is what qualifies you for the highest NYS Clean Heat tier. Some homeowners keep a wood stove or the old boiler as backup; that is allowed in some tiers and we'll show you how it changes the rebate.
Do I need ductwork?
No. Ductless indoor units — wall-mounted, floor-mounted or ceiling cassettes — connect to the outdoor unit through a 3-inch hole and a refrigerant line. If you already have ducts from a furnace, a Mitsubishi air handler can use them. Many whole-home designs use both.
How long does installation take?
A single-zone system is usually one day. A multi-zone or whole-home conversion is typically two to three days, longer if electrical panel work or decommissioning is involved. We schedule around the heating season so you are never without heat overnight.
What rebates are available in Essex County and Vermont?
New York homes in NYSEG or National Grid territory qualify for NYS Clean Heat rebates on qualifying Mitsubishi installations, with the largest amounts for whole-home conversions off oil, propane or electric resistance. Addison County, Vermont homes qualify through Efficiency Vermont plus utility bonuses. Amounts change by program and tier, so we confirm your exact number at the free estimate and file the paperwork for you.
Will a heat pump raise my electric bill?
Yes, and it should lower your total heating cost by more than that. A Mitsubishi H2i delivers roughly three units of heat per unit of electricity, while oil, propane and electric baseboard are among the most expensive fuels per unit of delivered heat. Our free calculator shows the electricity added and the fuel removed side by side for your home.
What warranty comes with the install?
Mitsubishi's 12-year parts warranty, registered by us as a Diamond Contractor ELITE, plus 12 years of labor through the Adirondack Shield Elite Care Plan, and our 180-Day Comfort Guarantee on qualifying installs.
