Indoor Air Quality & Air Filtration in Ticonderoga, NY
The air inside a tight Adirondack home in January is often worse than the air outside it. Adirondack Heat Pumps installs whole-home media filtration, humidifiers and dehumidifiers, energy recovery ventilators and the multi-stage filters built into every Mitsubishi indoor unit, for homes in Ticonderoga, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Schroon Lake and across Essex, Clinton, Franklin and northern Warren County. Wood smoke, spring pollen and bone-dry winter air are the three problems we solve most.

Wood smoke, pollen and a house sealed up for five months
Three things make indoor air in the Adirondacks different from a suburb downstate. First, wood heat: half the houses we visit have a stove or an outdoor boiler, and fine smoke particulate gets into the house from the stove door, the neighbor's chimney and the inversion that settles over Ticonderoga on a still cold night. Second, pollen: May and June here bring a pine-and-birch load that coats cars yellow, followed by ragweed in August. Third, dry winter air: outdoor air at -10°F holds almost no moisture, and once it's warmed indoors the relative humidity can fall to 10 to 20%, drier than a desert. That's the static shocks, cracked trim, nosebleeds and the house that feels colder than the thermostat says.
Summers add the opposite problem: a damp basement and a house that feels clammy even with the AC on. Both are fixable, and the fix depends on which problem you actually have, which is why we measure first.

Indoor air quality services
Whole-home media filtration
A 4-to-5-inch media cabinet on your furnace or air handler captures far more particulate than a one-inch filter without choking airflow the way a dense one-inch filter does.
Mitsubishi indoor unit filters
Every Mitsubishi head filters the room it's in, continuously, not just when a central blower happens to run. Washable base filters plus optional nano platinum, deodorizing and anti-allergy enzyme filters.
Whole-home humidifiers
Added to a forced-air system to hold comfortable winter humidity. Protects hardwood floors, trim and instruments, and makes the house feel warmer at a lower setting.
Dehumidifiers
For damp basements and the clammy-in-July house. Controls moisture independently of cooling, which an oversized AC never does.
Ventilation (ERV / HRV)
A tight, well-insulated house needs controlled fresh air. Energy and heat recovery ventilators bring it in without throwing away the heat you paid for.
Air purification and UV
For biological growth on the coil and contaminants a filter can't catch. Recommended where there's a real problem, not sold by default.
Carbon monoxide detection
Placement and testing on every home with a furnace, boiler, water heater or wood stove. The single most important air-safety item in a combustion-heated house.
Duct sealing first
Leaky returns pulling air from a crawlspace will defeat any filter. Sometimes the best IAQ fix is the ductwork.
Duct cleaning
Where ducts are genuinely loaded with debris we'll say so and point you to it. Sealing stops the dust at the source; cleaning deals with what's already there.
Filters in every room, not one in the basement
A conventional system has one filter at the furnace. A Mitsubishi ductless system has a filter in every indoor unit, cleaning the air of the room it serves every time it runs, which with an inverter system is most of the time. The base filters are washable and last up to ten years; we show you how to rinse them at install, and it takes five minutes.
Select indoor units take upgraded filters: a nano platinum filter with platinum-ceramic particles that kill bacteria and deodorize; a platinum deodorizing filter that absorbs smoke and cooking odors; and an anti-allergy enzyme filter that breaks down allergen proteins. Keep the cat, lose the sneezing. Ceiling-cassette and ducted units use their own filter sets, and some models add the 3D i-see Sensor, which scans the room for occupants and steers airflow toward or away from people, or drops into energy-saving mode when the room is empty.
Filter cleaning is part of every heat pump maintenance visit, and the filter cleaning guide covers the between-visit routine.

Winter dryness and summer damp are two different fixes
Winter. Cold air holds little moisture. Warm it to 70°F indoors and the relative humidity collapses. A whole-home humidifier on a forced-air system corrects it at the source; in a boiler or ductless home, a good standalone unit does the job. Properly humidified air feels warmer, and many homeowners turn the thermostat down a degree or two.
Summer. Air conditioning removes humidity only while it runs. An oversized system cools fast, shuts off, and never pulls the moisture out, which is why some houses are cold and clammy at once. Right-sizing fixes most of it. A whole-home dehumidifier handles the rest, including the fieldstone basement the AC never reaches. Inverter-driven Mitsubishi systems run long, low cycles that dehumidify far better than a single-stage AC, and a dedicated Dry mode when you want moisture removal without much cooling.

Signs your house has an air problem
- Static shocks and cracking trim or floorboards every winter
- Dry throat, sinus irritation or nosebleeds that clear up when you leave the house
- Clammy rooms in July with the AC running
- Musty smell from the basement or a crawlspace
- Condensation on the windows in winter
- Dust back within a day of cleaning
- Allergies or asthma worse indoors than out, especially in May and June
- A faint smoke smell that lingers after the stove is out
- Stale, stuffy air in a newly insulated or newly built house
How an air quality visit goes
Measure, don't guess
Humidity, filtration, ventilation and ductwork evaluated so we identify the problem you actually have before recommending equipment.
Right-size and install
Filtration, humidification or dehumidification matched to the house and integrated with your system so airflow and static pressure stay in spec.
Set and show
Target humidity set, performance verified, and a walk-through of what to change and when.
The cleanest air upgrade is often the heating system
Air quality is the underrated advantage of a Mitsubishi heat pump. There's no combustion inside the house: no burner, no flue, no carbon monoxide from the heating system at all. Every indoor unit filters its own room continuously. Inverter operation dehumidifies better than conventional AC. And for a wood-heated camp or farmhouse, running the heat pump as the primary heat means the stove burns less, which means less smoke in the house.
It also qualifies for NYS Clean Heat rebates and 18 months 0% financing, which a humidifier or a filter cabinet does not. Run your fuel bill through the savings calculator and we'll show you what a heat pump would change in both your bills and your air.

Air quality questions
What's the best filter for wood smoke?
Smoke is very fine particulate, so a deep media filter on a forced-air system, or the platinum deodorizing filter in a Mitsubishi indoor unit, catches far more than a standard one-inch filter. Sealing leaky returns and running the heat pump instead of the stove on mild days both reduce the source.
Do Mitsubishi heat pumps filter the air?
Yes. Every indoor unit has washable filters that last up to ten years, and select models accept nano platinum, deodorizing and anti-allergy enzyme filters. Because the unit runs most of the time, the room is filtered continuously.
How dry is too dry in winter?
Below about 30% relative humidity you'll see static, cracking wood and dry sinuses. Most homes are comfortable between 30 and 45% in winter; higher than that at -10°F outside and you'll get condensation on the windows.
Why is my house clammy with the AC on?
Usually an oversized air conditioner that cools fast and shuts off before dehumidifying. Right-sizing, an inverter system that runs long low cycles, or a whole-home dehumidifier fixes it.
Does a tight new house need ventilation?
Yes. A well-sealed home traps moisture, CO2 and odors. An ERV or HRV brings in fresh air while recovering most of the heat from the outgoing air, which matters a lot at -20°F in Saranac Lake.
Do you clean ducts?
Our focus is sealing and airflow, which stops dust at the source. Where ducts are genuinely loaded with debris we'll tell you and point you to cleaning.
