Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat (H2i®): What It Is and Why It Works in the North Country

Hyper-Heating INVERTER®, or H2i®, is Mitsubishi Electric's cold-climate heat pump technology. A variable-speed inverter compressor plus a "flash injection" refrigerant circuit keep the system pulling heat out of sub-zero air at full force: 100% of rated heating capacity at 5°F, continuous operation to -13°F, and -22°F on H2i Plus and FS-series models, with no electric strip heat. For a home in Ticonderoga, Lake Placid or Middlebury that burns oil or propane, it is the technology that makes an all-electric heat pump a straight replacement instead of a supplement.

In plain words

How Hyper-Heat pulls heat out of -13°F air

Every heat pump works by evaporating refrigerant in the outdoor coil so it absorbs heat from the air, then compressing it so it's hot enough to warm your rooms. The problem in the cold: as the outdoor air gets colder, the refrigerant pressure and flow through that coil drop, the compressor has less to work with, and output falls. Conventional heat pumps run out of steam around 20°F and lean on electric strip heat or quit.

Mitsubishi solved it two ways:

  • INVERTER-driven compressor. Instead of a fixed-speed motor that is either on or off, the compressor varies its speed continuously. In the cold it can spin faster to move more refrigerant without the strain that would damage a fixed-speed compressor. Think of a heart rate that rises with the work instead of a switch.
  • Flash injection. A bypass circuit diverts part of the refrigerant, flashes it to vapor, and injects it into the compressor partway through compression. That keeps mass flow and discharge temperature up when the outdoor coil is starved. The analogy Mitsubishi uses is an ice cream scoop with warm fluid in the handle: it keeps cutting when a plain scoop would stall.

The result is heat the way you expect it: around 110°F discharge air at 5°F outdoors, and still about 100°F at -13°F. Hot-Start means warm air from the first minute instead of a cool draft while the coil comes up to temperature.

The capacity curve

What H2i delivers as the temperature drops

Outdoor temperatureHeating capacity (% of rated)What you notice
47°F100%Shoulder-season heating at very low running cost
17°F100%A typical Ticonderoga January day, no change in comfort
5°F100%Full output, about 110°F supply air; most conventional units are already on strip heat here
-13°FReduced but still heating; about 100°F supply airA hard Champlain Valley night; the house holds setpoint if sized right
-22°FOperating on H2i Plus / FS-series modelsA High Peaks cold snap; the system we size for Lake Placid and Saranac Lake

Capacity figures are Mitsubishi Electric published ratings for Hyper-Heating INVERTER equipment. Actual output at your house depends on the model, line length and the load calculation we do at the estimate.

Inverter benefits beyond the cold

What the inverter does the other 360 days

The same variable-speed compressor that carries a -10°F night is what makes a Mitsubishi comfortable and cheap to run in October and July:

  • Steady temperature. The compressor modulates to match the load instead of blasting and stopping, so rooms hold within about a degree with no hot-cold swings.
  • Only the energy you need. At part load — most of the year — the system idles along at a fraction of full power.
  • No start-up spikes. A fixed-speed compressor draws a surge every time it kicks on. The inverter ramps, which is easier on your electric bill and on the equipment.
  • Fast recovery. Turn a zone up and the compressor runs hard until setpoint, then settles.
  • Quiet. Indoor wall units as low as 19 dB; the outdoor unit ramps instead of slamming on.
  • Real air conditioning. The same modulating behavior gives long, gentle cooling cycles that pull humidity out of a muggy August afternoon on Lake George.

Which models are H2i

H2i, H2i Plus and FS-series: what the names mean

Hyper-Heating is a feature of specific Mitsubishi outdoor units, not every Mitsubishi. When we design your system we specify H2i-rated equipment for every zone that has to carry heat in winter:

  • MUZ-FS (single-zone H2i Plus). Pairs one outdoor unit with one MSZ-FS wall unit. Operates to -22°F. Our go-to for a single room, camp or addition.
  • MXZ-SM and MXZ-C "Smart Multi" (multi-zone H2i). One outdoor unit for two to eight indoor units of any style. The backbone of whole-home conversions.
  • SUZ / PUZ universal and P-Series outdoor units with H2i. Drive ducted air handlers and light-commercial indoor units for furnace replacements, inns and offices.

Every one carries the 12-year parts warranty we register as a Diamond Contractor ELITE. 2025 and newer equipment runs on R-454B refrigerant. See outdoor units and the full product lineup.

Hyper-Heat vs. oil, propane and baseboard in the North Country

Because H2i keeps its efficiency in the cold instead of switching to resistance heat, a Mitsubishi system in Essex County delivers roughly three units of heat per unit of electricity across the season. Oil and propane deliver less than one unit of heat per unit of fuel and are the most expensive fuels per BTU; electric baseboard is exactly 1:1 at the same NYSEG rate. That gap is why most oil and propane homes we convert see their heating cost fall even after the added electricity. The exact number depends on your fuel price, your house and the system — which is what our free two-minute calculator works out, with $250 off the install when you complete it.

Installed cost depends on zones and unit styles; single-zone systems start in the low five figures before rebates, and whole-home systems are a larger investment offset by the top NYS Clean Heat tier and 18-month 0% financing. See the pricing guide and our post on what Hyper-Heat costs to use.

Hyper-Heat questions

Questions about Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat

What does H2i stand for?

Hyper-Heating INVERTER. It's Mitsubishi Electric's name for its cold-climate heat pump technology: a variable-speed inverter compressor combined with a flash-injection refrigerant circuit that keeps heating output up in sub-zero air.

Does Hyper-Heat work at -20°F?

Standard H2i units operate to -13°F. H2i Plus and FS-series models operate to -22°F, which is what we specify for Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake and Keene. All H2i equipment delivers 100% of rated capacity at 5°F.

Is Hyper-Heat worth the extra cost over a standard heat pump?

In the North Country, yes. A conventional heat pump loses most of its output below 20°F and falls back on expensive electric strip heat, which erases its savings in January. H2i has no strip heat and keeps its three-to-one efficiency deep into the cold, so it both heats the house and keeps the bill down. It is also what NYS Clean Heat rebates are written around.

Does Hyper-Heat need backup heat?

Not to operate. Many Champlain Valley homeowners decommission their oil or propane system entirely for the top rebate tier. In the High Peaks we size for -22°F-rated units and discuss keeping a wood stove or boiler for the handful of colder nights and for power outages.

Does the outdoor unit ice up?

Frost forms on any outdoor coil in cold, humid air. H2i runs a short reverse-cycle defrost only when needed and spaces cycles so the system heats for hours between them. We mount every unit above the snow line with a drain pan heater so defrost water drains instead of freezing under the coil.

Which Mitsubishi units have Hyper-Heat?

MUZ-FS single-zone units (H2i Plus, to -22°F), MXZ Smart Multi multi-zone outdoor units, and H2i-rated SUZ, PUZ and P-Series outdoor units for ducted and light-commercial applications. We specify H2i for every zone that has to carry winter heat.

What refrigerant do new Hyper-Heat systems use?

Mitsubishi equipment produced from 2025 on runs on R-454B, a lower-global-warming-potential refrigerant that replaced R-410A under federal rules. Performance ratings are unchanged and our techs are certified for it.
