Ductwork Services in Ticonderoga, NY

Leaky, undersized or uninsulated ductwork can waste 20 to 30% of the heated or cooled air your furnace, air handler or central AC produces. Adirondack Heat Pumps inspects, tests, seals, repairs and modifies residential ductwork for homes in Ticonderoga, Crown Point, Schroon Lake, Lake George, Whitehall and across Essex, Clinton, Franklin and northern Warren County, and tells you honestly when ductless is the smarter fix.

The problem between the furnace and the room

Why the back bedroom is always cold

If one room never gets comfortable, the propane bill seems high for the furnace you own, or the system runs all day and never catches up, the fault is often not the equipment. It's the ductwork. In a lot of North Country homes the ducts were added decades after the house was built, run through an unheated attic or crawlspace at -10°F, were joined with cloth tape that failed years ago, and have a return air path about half the size the blower needs.

The symptoms are familiar: a 1970s ranch in Crown Point with a toasty living room and an icebox back bedroom; a doublewide in Whitehall where the flex duct under the floor has sagged and crushed; an addition in Schroon Lake tapped off the nearest branch with no return at all.

We measure static pressure and register airflow rather than eyeballing it, so we can tell you where the system is losing capacity and what fix gives the most comfort per dollar.

Warning signs

Signs your ductwork is the problem

  • Rooms always too hot or too cold. Unbalanced, undersized or disconnected runs.
  • Weak airflow from some registers. Restriction, leakage or a crushed run upstream.
  • Bills that don't match the equipment. A new 96% furnace heating the attic is paying for heat nobody feels.
  • Dust back within a day of cleaning. Leaky returns pulling dust from the crawlspace or basement into the house.
  • Musty rooms. Ducts drawing air from a damp space.
  • Whistling, rattling or booming ducts. Undersized returns and high static pressure, which also shortens equipment life.
  • Short cycling or limit trips. Restricted airflow forcing the furnace into safety shutdown.
  • Visible sagging, crushed or disconnected duct. Common in older homes and in additions.
What we do

Ductwork services

Inspection and airflow testing

Static pressure and register airflow measured, accessible duct inspected, findings ranked by what will matter most.

Duct sealing

Joints, seams and boots sealed with mastic and proper materials, not cloth tape that fails in a few winters.

Duct repair

Reconnecting separated runs, replacing crushed or rotted sections, replacing failed flex and boots.

Added returns and resizing

Correcting the undersized return air that starves so many older furnaces, resizing trunks and branches.

Insulating ducts in cold spaces

Attics, crawlspaces and unheated basements at Adirondack temperatures strip heat off an uninsulated duct fast.

New runs for additions

Extending the system to an addition, finished basement or converted attic, sized properly instead of tapped off the nearest branch.

Zoning and balancing

Damper adjustment and zoning to even out upstairs and downstairs and the problem room.

Ducts for new equipment

Verifying and fixing duct capacity before a new furnace, central AC or Mitsubishi air handler goes in.

Duct cleaning referral and filtration

Sealing the returns stops most dust at the source. For what's already inside, see our indoor air quality page.

Why it matters

Good equipment on bad ducts is still a bad system

You can install a 98% AFUE furnace or a 19 SEER2 air conditioner and still get mediocre comfort if the ducts can't deliver the air. Industry testing consistently finds typical residential duct systems lose 20 to 30% of conditioned air to leaks, disconnections and uninsulated runs through unconditioned space, and that's in milder climates than ours.

Undersized return air is the single most common duct defect we find in older North Country homes. It starves the blower, raises static pressure, cuts capacity, makes the system loud and wears out the motor, and it's usually fixable for a fraction of the cost of new equipment. This is why we evaluate ductwork before we quote a furnace, an AC or a ducted heat pump.

Process

How a duct job goes

  1. Evaluate and measure

Inspect accessible ductwork, measure static pressure and airflow at the registers, find the actual losses.

  2. Fix in priority order

A plain-language list ranked by comfort and efficiency per dollar: seal, repair, add return, insulate, resize, balance.

  3. Verify

Re-measure airflow and static pressure after the work so we can show you the improvement instead of claiming it.

Considering a heat pump instead?

Sometimes the right fix is no ducts at all

If the duct system needs major surgery, it's worth asking whether you need ducts. Mitsubishi ductless systems put heating and cooling directly in each room: no duct losses, no balancing, and a thermostat in the bedroom that never got warm. For an older house, a finished attic, an addition or a camp, ductless is often the better investment than tearing up ceilings to run new trunk line.

Where the ducts are sound, a Mitsubishi ducted air handler uses them, heating to -13°F (-22°F on H2i Plus) and cooling in summer. Either way the heat pump qualifies for NYS Clean Heat rebates and 18 months 0% financing; duct repair alone does not. We'll tell you honestly whether sealing, going ductless or a mix gives you the most comfort per dollar.

FAQ

Ductwork questions

How do I know if my ducts are leaking?

Uneven rooms, weak registers, excess dust, high bills for the equipment you own, and ducts you can see hanging or disconnected in the basement or attic. We confirm it by measuring static pressure and airflow at the registers.

Is duct sealing worth it?

Usually, especially when ducts run through an unheated attic or crawlspace. Recovering 20 to 30% of lost air is a real change in comfort and fuel use for far less than new equipment.

Can you add ductwork to an addition?

Yes, if the existing system has the capacity. If it doesn't, a ductless Mitsubishi unit in the addition is often cheaper and works better than overloading the furnace.

Should I fix my ducts or go ductless?

If the ducts are sound and the fix is sealing and a return, fix them. If major rework is needed in an older house, ductless is frequently the better investment and qualifies for NYS Clean Heat rebates. We'll show you both.

Do you clean ducts?

Our focus is sealing, repair and airflow, which stops dust at the source. We can point you to duct cleaning where it's warranted and add filtration through our indoor air quality services.

Do you check ducts before installing a new furnace?

Always. New equipment on bad ducts underperforms from day one, and we won't quote a furnace or central AC without looking at what it's connected to.
