Mitsubishi Wall-Mounted Indoor Units for North Country Homes

The wall-mounted unit is the quiet, efficient standard of ductless heating and cooling and the indoor unit in most rooms we do, from Ticonderoga bedrooms to Saranac Lake camps. It hangs high on the wall, connects to the outdoor unit through one 3-inch hole, and throws conditioned air across the ceiling so you feel the temperature, not the draft. Three series cover every room and budget: the MSZ-FS Deluxe with the 3D i-see sensor and H2i Plus rating to -22°F, the MSZ-GL at an industry-low 19 dB, and the flat-panel MSZ-EF Designer in black, silver or white.

How it works in the room

Small on the wall, big on the bill

A wall unit holds a coil, a quiet cross-flow fan and a return-air sensor. It reads the room continuously, asks the outdoor unit for exactly the capacity it needs, and adjusts fan speed and vane angle automatically. In heating mode it sweeps warm air down and across the floor; in cooling it throws cool air along the ceiling so it settles gently. Because the inverter outdoor unit modulates instead of cycling, the room holds within about a degree with no on-off swings — and the fan on low is quieter than a library.

Paired with a Hyper-Heat outdoor unit, a wall unit delivers 100% of rated capacity at 5°F and keeps heating to -13°F, or -22°F on the FS series. That is why wall units carry most whole-home conversions off oil and propane across Essex County.

  • One 3-inch wall penetration; line set runs inside slim-duct line hide
  • Washable filters with nano-platinum and deodorizing stages — nothing to buy
  • Handheld remote standard; MHK2 wall thermostat and Comfort app optional
  • Single-zone or multi-zone — any wall unit works on an MXZ Smart Multi

Placement in North Country homes

Where a wall unit goes — and where it doesn't

  • High on the long wall, aimed down the length of the room, at least a few inches below the ceiling for airflow. Not above a bed where the cool air falls, not aimed at a doorway where the heat leaves.
  • 1800s village homes: interior walls work; we run the line set through a closet or up the exterior wall inside a cover that matches the trim. Plaster and lath are fine.
  • Camps: one unit sized for the main room, on the wall opposite the wood stove so the two don't fight.
  • Cathedral ceilings and lofts: a wall unit near the peak heats the rafters first; use a floor-mounted unit on the main level and a small wall unit in the loft.
  • Glass walls and sunrooms: no wall to hang it on — floor-mounted again.
  • Kitchens: grease film on the coil is the enemy; an FS with Dual Barrier Coating, or a ceiling cassette out of the splash zone.

Five myths about wall-mounted mini-splits

"They only work in new, tight houses." They're most efficient there, like any system, but they heat and cool older and historic homes very well — and they're often the only practical way to add air conditioning to one without ductwork.

"They're a supplement, not real heat." Paired with a Hyper-Heat outdoor unit, a wall unit delivers full capacity at 5°F and keeps going to -13°F or -22°F. Sized from a load calculation, wall units carry entire homes in Essex County.

"They're bad for air quality." The opposite. Multi-stage washable filters, nano-platinum and deodorizing stages, and a coil that dries itself after cooling so nothing grows. No ducts means no duct dust.

"They don't last." With annual maintenance a Mitsubishi wall unit has the same 15-to-20-year service life as any quality HVAC equipment. Dirt and neglect are what kill heat pumps, which is why we offer the Elite Care Plan.

"They're ugly." The GX Premier and FX Deluxe are slim white units most people stop noticing in a week; the EX Designer comes in black, silver or white for rooms where it matters; and ceiling cassettes or ducted units exist for rooms where nothing visible is the answer.

Wall-mounted questions

Questions about wall-mounted units

How high on the wall does the unit go?

Near the top of the wall, with a few inches of clearance to the ceiling for airflow. Higher is better for cooling because cool air falls; the vanes direct heat downward in winter.

Can a wall unit heat a whole open floor plan?

Often, yes — a correctly sized FS or GL on the long wall covers a combined living, dining and kitchen area in most North Country homes. Closed-door rooms need their own zone.

Which wall unit is the quietest?

The MSZ-GL runs at 19 dB on low fan, the lowest in the industry. The FS is 20 dB and the EF Designer 21 dB. All are quieter than a whisper.

What does the i-see sensor do?

The 3D i-see sensor on the MSZ-FS scans the room for people and surface temperatures, then directs airflow toward or away from occupants and trims capacity when the room is empty.

Can I put a wall unit on an interior wall?

Yes. The line set runs through a closet, soffit or wall cavity to the outdoor unit. We plan the route at the estimate so covers follow your trim.

How do I clean the filters?

Lift the front panel, slide the filters out, rinse them, let them dry and slide them back. Every month or two in heavy use. There are no filters to buy. Our filter-cleaning guide has photos.

Does a wall unit work in a camp that's closed up in winter?

Yes. Set a low hold temperature from the Comfort app, and it keeps the pipes from freezing on a fraction of the energy of baseboard. Warm it up from your phone before you drive up.
