Oil to Propane, Gas or Heat Pump Conversion in Ticonderoga, NY

Natural gas doesn't reach most of Essex County, so getting off oil in the North Country means one of three things: a RUUD propane furnace or boiler, a Mitsubishi cold-climate heat pump, or a hybrid of the two. Adirondack Heat Pumps converts oil-heated homes in Ticonderoga, Crown Point, Port Henry, Westport, Schroon Lake, Whitehall and across the Champlain Valley, and we price all three paths side by side with your actual fuel numbers before you sign anything.

Why people leave oil

The oil truck, the tank, and the bill you can't budget

Oil heats a large share of the older homes between Whitehall and Plattsburgh, and most of those boilers and furnaces are 25 to 40 years old, running at 60 to 70% efficiency off an aging steel tank. The reasons homeowners call us are consistent:

  • Price swings. A cold winter and a price spike together produce bills no one planned for.
  • Tank liability. Old steel tanks, especially buried ones, carry real environmental and financial risk if they leak. Cleanup can cost more than a new heating system.
  • Running out. An empty tank in a January cold snap means an emergency delivery, a bleed and restart, and often a service call.
  • Soot, smell and maintenance. Oil equipment needs more involved annual service than propane or a heat pump.
  • Resale. Buyers discount houses with old oil systems and buried tanks.
  • Equipment age. The boiler was going to need replacing anyway.

Three paths off oil in the North Country

Convert to propane

The most common fossil-fuel conversion here, because utility gas lines don't exist outside a few streets. Propane burns clean and delivers full efficiency from every RUUD furnace and boiler we install. Needs a tank, usually leased from your supplier, plus line work. You're still buying a delivered fuel whose price you don't control.

Convert to a Mitsubishi heat pump

No fuel, no tank, no deliveries, no combustion, and air conditioning included. Hyper-Heating INVERTER systems hold full capacity at 5°F and run to -13°F (-22°F on H2i Plus). The only option here that qualifies for NYS Clean Heat rebates. Often the lowest total cost once incentives are counted. Electric panel capacity has to be confirmed.

Hybrid: heat pump plus backup

The heat pump carries most of the season at low operating cost; your existing boiler, or a new propane unit, covers the coldest nights in Lake Placid or Saranac Lake. A practical middle path for homes with a serviceable boiler or a nervous first-time heat pump owner.

Natural gas: if a utility gas main actually serves your street, which is rare in our area outside parts of Plattsburgh and the Vermont side, we check first and install the same RUUD equipment on gas. We won't pretend it's an option where it isn't.

The math

What the fuel comparison actually looks like

Going from a 65% AFUE oil boiler to a 96% condensing propane boiler means buying roughly a third less fuel energy for the same heat. Whether that saves money depends on the price spread between oil and propane the year you do it, and that spread moves. We run it with current local prices, not national averages.

A heat pump changes the equation differently. It doesn't burn anything; it moves heat, delivering two to three units of heat per unit of electricity even in cold weather. In NYSEG territory, with oil or propane at recent prices, that's typically the lowest operating cost of the three, and the savings calculator will estimate it for your town and your bill in a few minutes. Homeowners who complete it before the estimate get $250 off a Mitsubishi install.

Scope

What a conversion actually involves

A conversion is more than swapping a boiler. Here's the full scope so you can compare quotes that leave items out.

  1. Fuel and electrical confirmation

Propane: tank size, placement, supplier coordination. Heat pump: panel capacity and any service upgrade. Gas: whether a main actually serves your street.

  2. Sized to a heat loss

Oil systems here were routinely oversized, so the correct replacement is often smaller than what you have, which saves on equipment and fuel.

  3. Venting, piping, tank work

Condensing propane equipment vents through a sidewall in PVC, not the old chimney, so we handle chimney abandonment or lining as required, gas piping and pressure test, and coordination on removing or decommissioning the oil tank.

  4. Install and commission

RUUD or Mitsubishi equipment installed to factory spec; combustion and CO testing on any fuel-burning appliance, refrigerant charge verified on heat pumps.

  5. Warranty and rebates

Warranty registered in your name, NYS Clean Heat paperwork filed on heat pump installs, Efficiency Vermont on the Vermont side.

  6. Guarantee

180-Day Comfort Guarantee on the job, 12-year parts and labor coverage on Mitsubishi systems through the Adirondack Shield Elite Care Plan.

Considering a heat pump instead?

Before you sign a propane contract, look at the other number

A propane conversion and a heat pump conversion cost less far apart than most people assume once NYS Clean Heat rebates and 18 months of 0% financing are counted, and propane gets neither. The heat pump also adds air conditioning to a house that has never had it, removes every combustion and carbon monoxide risk from the home, and ends the delivery schedule entirely. Converting from oil to propane commits you to another delivered fuel with a price you don't control, which is the exact problem you're leaving.

The old objection, that heat pumps don't work in Adirondack winters, hasn't matched the equipment for years. Ticonderoga's design temperature is about -10°F; a Mitsubishi H2i runs to -13°F and H2i Plus to -22°F, and the hybrid approach covers the rest. As a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor ELITE we'll price propane, heat pump and hybrid side by side with your real operating numbers. If propane is the right answer, we install RUUD and stand behind it.

FAQ

Oil conversion questions

Can I convert to natural gas in Ticonderoga?

Almost certainly not. Utility gas mains don't serve most of Essex County. Your realistic options are propane, a Mitsubishi heat pump, or a hybrid. We'll confirm whether gas exists on your street before anything else.

Does it cost more to convert to propane or to a heat pump?

Up front they're often closer than people expect, and the heat pump qualifies for NYS Clean Heat rebates and 0% financing while propane gets neither. Operating cost usually favors the heat pump in NYSEG territory. We price both for your house with real local numbers.

What happens to my old oil tank?

Above-ground tanks are pumped out and removed. Buried tanks need proper decommissioning or removal, which we coordinate; a leaking buried tank is the single biggest financial risk in an oil-heated home.

Can I keep my oil boiler as backup for a heat pump?

Yes, if it's serviceable. The hybrid setup lets the Mitsubishi system carry most of the season while the boiler covers the coldest nights. Many homeowners retire the boiler a few winters later once they trust the heat pump.

Will a heat pump really heat my house at -20°F?

Mitsubishi H2i systems hold 100% rated capacity at 5°F and keep running to -13°F; H2i Plus models run to -22°F. For Lake Placid and Saranac Lake we size for the cold and plan a backup. For Ticonderoga, Crown Point and the Champlain Valley the heat pump alone usually covers the whole winter.

How long does a conversion take?

Equipment replacement is usually one to two days. Tank set or removal and any electrical upgrade are scheduled around it. We give you a full timeline at the estimate.

Does my electrical panel need upgrading for a heat pump?

Sometimes. Many older North Country homes have 100-amp service that can still support a ductless system; whole-home conversions occasionally need a panel upgrade. We check at the estimate and include it in the quote if needed.
