Which water heater fits a North Country house
Cold showers, a rusting tank, or an oil-fired water heater quietly running your boiler all summer: all three are common calls from Ticonderoga to Westport. The right replacement depends on your fuel, your basement and how your household uses hot water.
A lot of boiler homes here make domestic hot water off the boiler with a tankless coil or an indirect tank, which means the oil or propane boiler fires in July just to heat showers. Replacing that with a hybrid heat pump water heater lets the boiler rest for half the year. If you're planning a heat pump conversion and retiring the boiler, you'll need a dedicated water heater anyway, and we plan the hybrid into the job so you never lose hot water.
We install, repair and replace all three types below, and we service gas, propane, oil and electric water heaters of any brand.

Tank, tankless or hybrid
Storage tank
40 to 80 gallons kept hot and ready. Lowest up-front cost, simplest install, runs on propane, oil or electric. Expect 8 to 12 years of service. The right answer for a rental, a camp, or a tight budget.
Get a tank quoteTankless
Heats water on demand and never runs out. A few seconds longer to the tap, a much smaller footprint, and no standby loss. Propane tankless units need adequate gas supply and venting, which we confirm at the estimate.
Get a tankless quoteRUUD hybrid heat pump
Uses 60 to 70% less electricity than a standard electric tank. A small heat pump on top of the tank pulls heat from basement air and moves it into the water, with electric elements as backup. Quieter than a refrigerator, with leak detection, auto-shutoff and app control. Qualifies for NY utility rebates.
See rebatesSame technology as our heating systems, in a smaller box
A hybrid water heater is a tank with a heat pump on top. It pulls heat out of the air in your basement or utility room and puts it into the water, which is three to four times more efficient than resistance elements. As a side effect it cools and dehumidifies the basement, which most Adirondack basements could use in August.
Two things to know for our climate. First, it wants a reasonably sized, reasonably warm space; a cramped closet or an unheated crawlspace is not the spot, and we'll tell you if your basement isn't a fit. Second, the electric elements kick in automatically when demand spikes, so a houseful of guests at a Lake George camp doesn't run out of hot water.
Hybrid heat pump water heaters are eligible for utility rebates in New York through NYSEG and National Grid, and through Efficiency Vermont across the lake. We confirm the exact amount at the estimate and file the paperwork. They typically carry 10-year warranties.

Is it about to fail?
- Less hot water than it used to make, or it runs out fast. Sediment, a failed element or a failing dip tube.
- Rumbling or banging from the tank. Sediment boiling on the bottom. Flushing helps early; past a point, it's a replacement.
- Water pooling at the base. A leaking tank can't be repaired. Call before it floods the basement.
- Rusty or smelly hot water. A spent anode rod or a corroding tank.
- Pilot or igniter problems on propane units. Thermocouples, gas valves and igniters are routine repairs.
- Past 10 years old. Standard tanks last 8 to 12. A planned replacement is cheaper than an emergency with water damage.

How a water heater replacement goes
Size it to your household
Number of bathrooms, people, and whether you run the dishwasher and a shower at once. We size tank capacity or tankless flow rate to real use, not a rule of thumb.
Install in a day
Remove the old unit, set the new one, new connections, expansion tank and pan as code requires, venting on propane units, and the 240V circuit check on hybrids.
Test, register, rebate
Temperature set, leaks checked, warranty registered, and on hybrid units the utility rebate paperwork filed for you.
If the boiler makes your hot water, this is the moment to plan both
A hybrid water heater and a Mitsubishi heat pump are the same idea applied to two jobs. Homes that convert off oil or propane with a whole-home Mitsubishi system usually pair it with a hybrid water heater, retire the boiler entirely, and stop buying fuel altogether. Both pieces qualify for rebates: the heating system through NYS Clean Heat and the water heater through the utility's own program. Financing is 18 months at 0%.
Run your fuel bill through the savings calculator, and we'll scope the water heater and the heating side together at one free estimate. If all you need today is a tank, that's what we'll install.

Water heater questions
How long does a water heater last?
Standard tanks 8 to 12 years. Past year 10 you're on borrowed time. Hybrid heat pump water heaters typically carry 10-year warranties, and tankless units often run longer with annual descaling.
What is a hybrid heat pump water heater?
A tank with a small heat pump on top that pulls heat from the surrounding air and moves it into the water, using 60 to 70% less electricity than a standard electric tank. Electric elements take over only when demand spikes.
Are there rebates on a heat pump water heater?
Yes. NYSEG and National Grid offer rebates on qualifying heat pump water heaters in New York, and Efficiency Vermont does in Vermont. We confirm what applies to you before you commit and file the paperwork.
Will a hybrid work in a cold Adirondack basement?
Usually. It needs a space with enough air volume and a temperature that stays above the mid-40s. Most basements qualify; unheated crawlspaces and small closets don't. We check at the estimate.
My boiler makes my hot water. What happens if I switch to a heat pump?
You'll need a dedicated water heater. We plan a hybrid heat pump water heater into the conversion so you never lose hot water, and its rebate stacks with the heat pump rebate.
Is tankless worth it on propane?
It can be, for a household that wants endless hot water and has the gas supply and venting for it. The up-front cost is higher than a tank and the propane line often needs upsizing. We'll tell you honestly whether your house is a good fit.
How long does replacement take?
Most tank and hybrid replacements are done in a day. Adding tankless where none existed may take one to two days.
