High Peaks cold, Route 73 homes and camps, no gas line

Keene is about an hour from Ticonderoga by Route 9N through Elizabethtown and Route 73 up the Ausable valley. Our crews drive it on the way to Lake Placid, so Keene and Keene Valley are not an afterthought; they are on the route. The valley is narrow and cold air pools in it. Nights of -20°F are normal, -30°F is not unusual, and the heating season is long.

The houses here are a mix of 1800s village homes in Keene and Keene Valley, classic Adirondack camps and timber-frame homes up the side roads, newer energy-efficient builds owned by people who came for the hiking and stayed, and rental properties that fill up every weekend the High Peaks trailheads are open. None of them have natural gas. Most run on oil or propane with a wood stove, and a surprising number still rely on electric baseboard.

For a tight newer home, a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat system is usually the only heat you need. For an older camp or a drafty village house, we size the heat pump for the vast majority of the season and keep the stove or boiler for the handful of nights below -22°F. Either way the oil bill drops sharply, and you get cooling for the humid stretch in July that cabins here never had.

Why Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat works in Keene

The High Peaks are the hardest heating test in New York State. Nights of -20°F are normal here and -30°F shows up most winters, with a heating season that runs from October into May. Mitsubishi Electric built the Hyper-Heating INVERTER (H2i) line for exactly this: 100% of rated heating capacity at 5°F, continued operation to -13°F on standard H2i equipment, and down to -22°F on the newer H2i Plus and FS-series models we install in Keene.

Below those limits the unit does not die; it keeps running at reduced output while the home coasts on stored heat. We size for the coldest realistic night, not the average one, and we tell you straight whether a wood stove or backup makes sense for your house. The inverter compressor modulates instead of cycling on and off, so the system sips power at 20°F and ramps up only when the thermometer dives.

What we install in Keene

Most Keene homes have no ductwork and no natural gas, so the system we design starts from the rooms you actually live in. Here is what we install most often in Keene:

  • Whole-home conversions off oil and propane in village homes and newer builds
  • Camp and timber-frame systems with floor-mounted units for cathedral ceilings and knee walls
  • Multi-zone systems for rental homes near the trailheads with per-room control and app access
  • Wall-mounted units for bedrooms and additions, as quiet as 19 dB
  • Ducted air handlers for newer homes that already have ductwork
  • Repair and maintenance on existing heat pumps, furnaces and boilers of any brand

Heat pump rebates for Keene homeowners

Keene is NYSEG territory, which means NYS Clean Heat rebates administered through NYSEG apply to qualifying Mitsubishi cold-climate heat pump installs. Adirondack Heat Pumps is a participating contractor, so the rebate comes off your invoice instead of arriving as a check months later. Homes converting fully off oil or propane generally qualify for the higher tiers; single-zone and partial-home systems qualify for less.

Because Keene homes burn so much fuel per winter, the savings from a conversion are among the largest in our territory, and whole-home jobs typically qualify for the higher rebate tier.

Programs and tiers change, so we do not print dollar figures here. We confirm your exact amount at the free estimate and file the paperwork for you. See rebates & savings and financing.

Run your numbers first. Our savings calculator compares your current oil, propane or electric bill against a Mitsubishi system and generates a $250-off code you can use at your estimate.

FAQ

Heat pump questions from Keene homeowners

How cold is too cold for a heat pump in Keene Valley?

The Mitsubishi H2i Plus and FS-series units we install operate to -22°F and keep running at reduced output below that. Keene Valley sees a few nights a winter below that mark, so we size for the coldest realistic night and tell you whether your house should keep a stove or boiler for backup. Most newer homes do not need it; most older camps do.

Does a heat pump work in a timber-frame home with a cathedral ceiling?

Yes. We typically use a floor-mounted unit in the great room so the warm air starts low rather than pooling at the ridge, with wall units in the bedrooms. Ceiling fans on low help too.

Which utility is Keene on for rebates?

Keene is NYSEG territory. NYS Clean Heat rebates through NYSEG apply to qualifying installs and we take them off your invoice. We confirm the tier at the free estimate.

Can I control a rental in Keene from out of town?

Yes. Every system can be connected to the Mitsubishi Comfort app or kumo cloud for per-zone control, guest lockouts and low-temperature alerts.

How long does an install in Keene take?

A single-zone system is usually one day. A whole-home multi-zone conversion is typically two to three days. Our own Mitsubishi-certified crew from Ticonderoga does the work; we do not subcontract.
