Why RUUD boilers

From a 65% oil boiler to 96% condensing propane

The cast-iron oil boilers in 1900s village homes along Montcalm Street and Lake Champlain commonly run at 60 to 70% efficiency. A third of every oil delivery leaves through the chimney. A modern condensing boiler reaches 96% AFUE and modulates its flame to match the load instead of firing full blast and shutting off, which means steadier baseboard temperatures and a lot less fuel.

RUUD boilers are ENERGY STAR certified, use stainless steel heat exchangers built for long service, cut NOx emissions by up to 75%, and configure for propane, which is what almost every new boiler in Essex County burns since natural gas doesn't reach us. We size each boiler to a calculated heat loss (oversized boilers short cycle and waste fuel), handle venting and combustion air to code, and register the warranty for you.

The three RUUD boilers we install

All three are ENERGY STAR certified condensing boilers available on propane or natural gas. We size it for you at the free estimate.

Best: heat + hot water in one

RUUD L-Series Combi

Up to 96% AFUE, fully modulating, ASME rated

  • Heats the house and makes endless domestic hot water, so no separate water heater
  • Patented Labyrinth heat exchanger with only four moving parts
  • Touchscreen control with outdoor reset that lowers water temperature on mild days
  • Variable-speed boiler pump
  • Frees up the floor space the old boiler and tank took

Best for: replacing an aging boiler and water heater at the same time.

Better: maximum zone control

RUUD FT Series Heating-Only

Up to 96% AFUE, up to 10:1 turndown

  • Runs at 10% of capacity on a 40°F day instead of short cycling
  • Built-in four-zone control, no separate zone panel
  • Stainless firetube heat exchanger
  • Vents in PVC, CPVC or polypropylene for tricky basements
  • Pairs with an indirect tank for high-volume hot water

Best for: larger and multi-zone homes that want room-by-room control.

Good: proven simplicity

RUUD L-Series Heating-Only

Up to 96% AFUE, ASME rated, four moving parts

  • Same Labyrinth heat exchanger as the combi
  • Serves baseboard, cast-iron radiators, radiant floor and hydro-air coils
  • Touchscreen with outdoor reset
  • Can add an indirect tank for domestic hot water

Best for: a straight replacement of an old cast-iron boiler with high efficiency and long life.

Repair

Boiler repair on every brand, oil included

We repair boilers we didn't install. These are the calls we get most from Ticonderoga to Lake Placid.

No heat, no circulation

Failed circulator pumps, seized zone valves and air-locked loops are the most common no-heat boiler calls.

Low pressure, constant refilling

Usually a leak, a waterlogged expansion tank or a bad fill valve. Worth finding before it damages the boiler.

Ignition and lockout

Igniters, flame sensors and gas valves on modern condensing boilers; nozzles, electrodes and cad cells on oil boilers.

Leaks and corrosion

Leaking fittings, circulator flanges and corroded sections on aging cast-iron boilers.

One cold zone

One room or floor cold while the rest heats fine is almost always a stuck zone valve or a failed thermostat.

Kettling and banging

Mineral scale on the heat exchanger or air that needs bleeding. Loud, and fixable.

Replace or repair

Signs the boiler is done

  • Twenty-plus years old. Cast iron lasts, but at an efficiency that costs you every delivery.
  • Below 80% AFUE. A 96% condensing boiler cuts fuel use substantially.
  • Rust, corrosion, or a leaking section. A cracked cast-iron section usually can't be repaired economically.
  • Repeated repairs in one winter. Parts for old boilers get harder to find every year.
  • Rooms that never heat evenly. Often a sizing, zoning or circulation problem a new design fixes.
  • Your water heater is also failing. The moment to consider a combi boiler and handle both.

How a boiler install goes

  1. Free estimate and heat loss

We calculate the house's heat loss, evaluate piping, zones, radiators or baseboard, and confirm venting and combustion air meet code. Oversized boilers short cycle; we size to the number.

  2. Install and near-boiler piping

Correct near-boiler piping is what separates a boiler that lasts from one that fails early. We install and commission to RUUD spec, usually in one day for a straight swap.

  3. Test, register, guarantee

Combustion analysis and CO test, zones balanced, warranty registered in your name, 180-Day Comfort Guarantee on the job.

Considering a heat pump instead?

No ducts is not a problem. It's what mini-splits are for.

Boiler homes assume heat pumps are off the table because there's no ductwork. Mitsubishi ductless systems are built for exactly that house: wall, floor or ceiling units in the rooms you use, no ducts, heating to -13°F (-22°F on H2i Plus), and air conditioning in a home that has never had it.

The most common setup we install in boiler homes from Ticonderoga to Saranac Lake is the hybrid: the heat pump carries the bulk of the season at a fraction of oil or propane cost, and the boiler stays as backup for the -25°F nights. Only the heat pump qualifies for NYS Clean Heat rebates and 18 months 0% financing; a boiler replacement gets neither. Run the savings calculator on your fuel bill and we'll show the boiler, the heat pump and the hybrid side by side at the estimate. If a new RUUD boiler is the right answer, we install it and stand behind it.

FAQ

Boiler questions

What's a combi boiler, and is it right for me?

A combi boiler heats the house and makes domestic hot water on demand in one unit, so you don't need a separate water heater. It fits most households well; very large families or homes with high simultaneous hot-water demand sometimes do better with a heating-only boiler and an indirect tank. We size for your actual use.

Can you replace my oil boiler with a propane one?

Yes. We size the new RUUD boiler, run sidewall PVC venting, pipe from your propane tank, coordinate the tank set with your supplier, and commission and combustion-test the system. Details on the oil conversion page.

Do you repair boilers you didn't install?

Yes. Oil and propane boilers of all major brands, including those installed by Champlain Valley Heating & Plumbing.

How long does a boiler last?

Cast-iron boilers often run 25 to 30 years, at falling efficiency. Modern condensing boilers are typically rated for 15 to 20 years with annual maintenance.

Can I add a heat pump without removing my boiler?

Yes. That hybrid approach is our most common recommendation in boiler homes. The Mitsubishi system carries most of the season, the boiler covers the coldest nights, and the heat pump portion qualifies for NYS Clean Heat rebates.

Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?

Usually a small leak, a waterlogged expansion tank or a failing pressure-reducing valve. Repeatedly adding water brings in fresh oxygen that corrodes the boiler, so it's worth diagnosing promptly.

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Annually. Oil boilers especially need yearly nozzle, filter and combustion service. Pricing is on the maintenance pricing page.
