Mitsubishi Heat Pump Troubleshooter

Answer a few questions about what your Mitsubishi system is doing — no heat, a blinking light on the indoor unit, ice on the outdoor unit, water dripping, a smell, a noise — and get the likely cause, what you can safely check yourself, and when to stop and call us. Built from the calls our Ticonderoga service team takes every winter.

Before you call: the five checks that fix most "problems"

A large share of winter service calls on Mitsubishi systems in the North Country turn out to be one of these. Run through them first; the troubleshooter walks you through each in order.

  • Mode and setpoint. A remote bumped to COOL or DRY in January, or a setpoint changed by a guest, is the most common "no heat" call. Set the unit to HEAT, raise the setpoint, and give it ten minutes.
  • Defrost. Below about 40°F in humid air the outdoor unit periodically stops its fan, warms its coil and may steam or drip. The indoor fan slows or stops for a few minutes. That is normal and it resumes on its own. A solid block of ice packed under or around the outdoor unit is not normal.
  • Filters. A clogged washable filter cuts airflow, drops output and can trip an error. Pull it, rinse it, dry it, replace it. See our filter cleaning guide.
  • Snow and airflow. After a storm, make sure the outdoor coil and the space around the unit are clear. Never chip ice off the coil.
  • Power. Check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect. If the breaker tripped, reset it once; if it trips again, stop and call.

When to stop and call

A blinking indicator pattern you can't clear, a breaker that trips twice, water inside the house from the indoor unit, a burning or chemical smell, grinding or screeching from the outdoor unit, or no heat at all after the checks above — those are service calls. If you have app control set up, our North Zone consultant can often read the system's status and resolve control-related issues remotely. For anything else, schedule a repair or, if you have no heat in winter, use our heat-out page and call (518) 812-1958 — the line is answered 24/7 and after-hours calls are returned the next business morning.

Keeping it from happening again

Most mid-winter failures trace back to a dirty coil, a frozen drain pan or a system that was never commissioned properly. Annual maintenance — coil and blower cleaning, drain and pan heater check, charge verification, control settings — is included in the Adirondack Shield Elite Care Plan with $0 repairs and 24-hour priority service, or available on our maintenance menu. See heat pump repair for what our techs do on a service visit.

Questions homeowners ask

My outdoor unit is steaming and the fan stopped. Is it broken?

Almost certainly not. That's a defrost cycle: the unit briefly reverses to melt frost off the coil, the fan pauses, steam rises and water drips. It resumes heating in a few minutes. Hyper-Heat units space defrosts so you get hours of heat between them.

The indoor unit light is blinking. What does it mean?

Blink patterns are error codes. The troubleshooter asks you to count the pattern and tells you what it usually indicates and whether a reset is safe. If it returns after a reset, call us with the pattern.

Can you fix my heat pump remotely?

Often, for control and settings issues, if the system is connected to the Mitsubishi Comfort or kumo cloud app. Our consultant can read status and adjust settings over the phone. Hardware faults need a technician.

Do you service heat pumps you didn't install?

Yes. We service and repair Mitsubishi systems of any age across Essex, Clinton, Franklin and northern Warren counties and Addison County, Vermont, and other brands' heat pumps as well.

Is it safe to run the system with ice on the outdoor unit?

A frost coat is normal. If ice has built into a solid block around the fan or under the coil, shut the system off at the remote and call us — running it can damage the fan. Never chip ice off the coil.
