Heat Out? Here's What to Do

If your heat pump, furnace or boiler has quit in the North Country, do three things in order: make sure the house is safe, run the 60-second checks below, then call Adirondack Heat Pumps at (518) 812-1958 — answered any hour. We repair every brand, and no-heat calls go to the front of the line when it is -10°F in Ticonderoga.

  • Any brand, any fuel
  • No-heat calls first
  • Shield members: 24-hour response
  • Veteran-owned · Ticonderoga, NY

Three steps, in this order

  1. Step 1 — Safety first

Before anything else, rule out the two things that can hurt you.

  2. Step 2 — The 60-second checks

About one no-heat call in five is a tripped breaker, a buried outdoor unit or a remote in the wrong mode.

  3. Step 3 — Call us

    (518) 812-1958, any hour. Tell us what you found in step 2 and we come prepared.

Step 1

Safety first

Smell gas or propane? Do not flip switches, light anything or use the phone inside. Leave the house, then call 911 and your propane supplier or gas utility from outside.

Carbon monoxide alarm sounding, or headache, dizziness or nausea with a furnace or boiler running? Get everyone outside, including pets, and call 911. Do not go back in until the fire department clears it. CO is odorless; a cracked heat exchanger or blocked flue on an oil or propane appliance is a real risk in a tight winter house.

Water pouring from a boiler or pipes? Shut the boiler's power switch and the water feed valve if you can reach them safely, and call us.

Heat pumps burn nothing and produce no CO, which is one reason many North Country families switch. If you have a Mitsubishi system and no fuel-burning equipment, go straight to step 2.

Step 2

The 60-second checks

Heat pump (Mitsubishi or any brand)

  • Breaker. Check the panel for the outdoor unit's breaker and the indoor unit's. Reset once. If it trips again, stop and call.
  • Mode. The remote or thermostat must show HEAT — not Fan, Dry, Cool or Auto. On a Mitsubishi remote the mode symbol is the sun. On the MHK2 thermostat or the Comfort app, check the mode setting.
  • Outdoor unit buried or iced. After a storm, dig it out and clear 18 inches on all sides and above. Brush snow off the top by hand; never chip ice with a tool. A unit sitting in a drift cannot pull heat from the air.
  • Defrost is normal. In cold, damp weather the outdoor fan stops, the unit steams and the indoor fan pauses for 5–10 minutes. That is the defrost cycle, not a failure. Wait 15 minutes before worrying.
  • Filters. Pull the indoor unit's mesh filters and rinse them. A clogged filter cuts airflow enough to look like no heat.
  • Power outage. After an outage the system may need a minute to restart; some units need the remote's power button pressed again. Check that neighbors have power too.
  • Error code. Note any code blinking on the indoor unit or showing on the remote and tell us when you call.

Furnace or boiler

  • Thermostat set to HEAT and above room temperature; fresh batteries if it has them
  • Furnace power switch (looks like a light switch on or near the unit) is on; breaker not tripped
  • Oil tank is not empty — check the gauge; propane tank above 20%
  • Furnace filter not clogged; a dirty filter can trip the high-limit switch
  • Reset button on the oil burner: press it once only. Repeated resets can flood the chamber with oil.

Still cold? The Mitsubishi heat pump troubleshooter walks through error codes and symptoms step by step, and heat pump malfunction explains the common ones.

Call (518) 812-1958 — any hour

A live person in the Ticonderoga office answers Monday–Friday, 8–5. Nights, weekends and holidays our assistant takes your name, address, what you checked and the best number to reach you, and the office calls you back first thing the next business morning to confirm a time. Adirondack Shield members have a guaranteed diagnostic response within 24 hours.

What to expect

  1. We triage

A completely cold house with kids, elderly family or pipes at risk goes ahead of a system that is limping. Tell us which it is.

  2. We diagnose and quote

The technician finds the fault and gives you a written price before any repair. Genuine Mitsubishi parts; common parts on the truck.

  3. Heat back on — or a plan

Most repairs are done on the first visit. If the equipment is not worth fixing, we say so, help you get temporary heat sorted, and quote a replacement with rebates and 0% financing.

Meanwhile: close doors to unused rooms, let faucets drip on exterior walls if the house is dropping below 50°F, and run space heaters only on their own circuit, never on an extension cord.

FAQ

No-heat questions

My Mitsubishi heat pump is blowing cool air in heat mode. Is it broken?

Probably not. During defrost the indoor fan slows or stops for 5–10 minutes and air from the unit feels cool. Mitsubishi units also ramp the fan down as the room reaches setpoint, so the air feels less hot than a furnace. If it has been more than 15 minutes with no warm air and the outdoor unit is clear of snow, call us.

Does a heat pump work at -20°F?

Mitsubishi Hyper-Heating INVERTER systems deliver 100% of rated heating capacity at 5°F and keep operating to -13°F, and H2i Plus models to -22°F. In Lake Placid or Saranac Lake on a -25°F morning, output drops but a properly sized system keeps the house warm. A system that cannot keep up in those conditions is usually undersized, iced over or low on refrigerant.

Is it an emergency if my heat is out?

In a North Country winter, yes — pipes can freeze within hours in an unheated house. Call us any hour. If the house is above 50°F and you have a backup heat source, it can wait for the next business day and we book it as a priority repair.

Do you repair furnaces and boilers, or only heat pumps?

Both. We repair oil and propane furnaces, boilers, water heaters and central AC of any brand, in addition to Mitsubishi and other heat pumps.

I'm on the Adirondack Shield plan. What do I do?

Call the same number, (518) 812-1958, and say you are a Shield member. You get a diagnostic response within 24 hours, and trip, labor, parts and refrigerant on a covered failure are $0.
