Why our estimate is higher, and why it is worth it.
Two estimates can list the same Mitsubishi outdoor unit and the same indoor heads. Whether that system heats your house at -20°F for twenty winters or starts costing you money in year three is decided by what it sits on, how the refrigerant lines were handled, whether anyone registered the warranty, and who comes back when it matters. That is what you are buying. Here is how we build it in the North Country.

What a bargain install looks like in a Keene Valley February
Nobody notices a bad installation the day it goes in. The unit turns on, the house warms up, the truck leaves. The problems show up later, on the worst possible nights.
A -18°F night in Saranac Lake when a hand-tightened flare has finally leaked enough refrigerant that the system cannot keep up. A summer thunderstorm that sends a spike down a rural NYSEG line and takes out the inverter board, the most expensive part in the system and not a manufacturer defect, so nobody's warranty pays. A fan blade that hits the block of ice that has been growing under the coil all winter because there was no pan heater. A unit set on a plastic pad that is now buried in the snow it was supposed to be melting. A unit bought online with no factory warranty at all.
And the quiet one: a system that never leaks and never fails, and never comes close to the efficiency on the brochure, because it was sized off square footage and nobody pulled a proper vacuum. You pay for that one every month for fifteen years and never know why.
Every item in those paragraphs is something we have been called to fix on a system somebody else installed. Every one is preventable on install day.

Six things on every job that are usually missing from a lower quote
None of these is optional with us. Each exists because we have seen what happens without it.
A real load calculation
We size from your home's actual heat loss: insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage and your fuel history. Ticonderoga's design temperature is about -10°F, and Lake Placid's is colder. Oversized units short-cycle and never dehumidify; undersized ones fall behind on the night you need them. Sizing right is why we can put a guarantee on the result.
Proper line sets, flared and tested
Refrigeration-grade copper, insulated on both lines for the full run, flared on site and torqued to Mitsubishi's spec, then nitrogen pressure-tested and pulled to a measured deep vacuum before a drop of refrigerant goes in. Moisture left in a system becomes acid that eats the compressor. Hand-tightened flares are the most common failure we find on other people's installs.
A drain pan heater
A cold-climate heat pump defrosts itself all winter, and that water has to go somewhere. Without a pan heater it refreezes under the coil until the fan hits it. In the Adirondacks this is the cheapest insurance in the whole system, and it is on every install we do.
Surge protection
The inverter and control boards are what make a Mitsubishi system efficient, and they are the most expensive parts to replace. Rural power in the North Country is not clean. A dedicated surge protector at the disconnect takes the hit instead of your board. Surge damage is not covered by any warranty, so we stop it before it gets there.
Condenser on a stand over a framed gravel pad
The outdoor unit sits on a stand above your snow line, over a framed, leveled gravel pad that drains defrost water away. Not a plastic pad on the ground, not a painted-steel bracket that road salt rusts through. Where roof slides or drifting snow threaten the coil, we add snow protection and decide it at the estimate, not after your first winter.
Clean, straight line-hide runs
Refrigerant lines run inside UV-rated line-hide, plumb and square, with every wall penetration sleeved and sealed against water, air and mice. It is the part of the job your neighbors see, and the part that tells you how the rest was done.
Mitsubishi's 12-year warranty comes with the installer, not the box
This is the part that catches people. Mitsubishi Electric equipment carries a base warranty. The 12-year parts warranty is only available when the system is installed and registered by a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor. A general contractor, a handyman or a DIY install with equipment bought online can give you the identical outdoor unit, but not that warranty, and online equipment from an unauthorized seller may carry no factory warranty at all.
Adirondack Heat Pumps holds Diamond Contractor ELITE, the top tier, re-earned every year. Every system we install is registered the day we commission it, so the full coverage is on file before your first heating bill arrives.
Then we go further than the factory. Mitsubishi's warranty covers parts, not labor, and labor is typically half of a repair bill. The Adirondack Shield Elite Care Plan adds 12 years of labor, $0 covered repairs, twice-a-year maintenance and 24-hour priority service, from $28 a month for a single zone, and it transfers to the next owner of the house. And the 180-Day Comfort Guarantee puts the design risk on us: if a qualifying system we designed does not keep you comfortable through its first season, we make it right.
Ask any contractor three questions: Are you a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor? Will you register my 12-year warranty, and can I see the confirmation? Does your price include labor coverage, and for how long? Vague answers are your answer.

What you are comparing when ours is the higher number
You are going to get more than one estimate. You should. When you line them up, ours will usually be the higher one, sometimes even against another Diamond dealer, and almost always against a general contractor who "does heat pumps too" or a quote built around equipment you bought yourself online.
That number is not a markup on the same job. It is the price of everything on this page: the load calculation, the stand and the gravel pad, the pan heater, the surge protector, the torque wrench, the nitrogen and the micron gauge, the employees who come back, the labor plan, and the paperwork that gets your NYS Clean Heat rebate approved. Most of those never appear on a lower estimate, because leaving them out is how the estimate got lower.
A low quote usually is not generosity. It is a contractor leaving things out that you will not notice until a -20°F night in Wilmington, or until a power surge takes out an inverter board a surge protector would have saved.
Diamond status does not change this. It means a contractor met Mitsubishi's training and volume requirements; it says nothing about what goes into the install. Our standard is ours, not Mitsubishi's minimum. Ask any contractor, Diamond or not, to list every item below in writing, then compare again.
Adirondack Heat Pumps vs. a typical lower quote
| Line item | Typical lower quote | Adirondack Heat Pumps | What it costs you later without it |
|---|---|---|---|
| System sizing | Square-footage guess | Load calculation on the house | Short-cycling, humidity problems, falls behind below zero |
| Outdoor unit base | Plastic pad on the ground or painted-steel bracket | Stand over a framed gravel pad, above the snow line | Unit buried in snow, rusted stand, ice-damaged coil |
| Drain pan heater | Often omitted | Included | Ice under the coil, broken fan blade, no-heat call in January |
| Surge protection | Rarely included | Included at the disconnect | Inverter or control board replacement, covered by no warranty |
| Line set | Thin-wall copper, partly insulated | Refrigeration-grade, both lines insulated, UV line-hide | Refrigerant leaks, lost capacity, water in the wall |
| Flares & evacuation | Hand-tight, quick purge | Torqued to spec, nitrogen test, measured deep vacuum | Slow leaks, acid in the system, early compressor failure |
| Line-hide | Exposed foam and tape | Straight UV-rated runs, sealed penetrations | Crumbling insulation in two summers, mice in October |
| Warranty | Base factory warranty, or none on online equipment | Mitsubishi 12-year parts (Diamond registered) + 12-year labor plan | Labor bill on every "covered" repair; short parts coverage |
| Guarantee | None | 180-Day Comfort Guarantee | You own the problem if the design was wrong |
| Rebates | "You can apply yourself" | Confirmed at the estimate and filed by us as a participating contractor | Missed NYS Clean Heat or Efficiency Vermont money, often larger than the price gap |
| Who installs it | Subcontractor crew or a general contractor | Our own Mitsubishi-trained employees | Nobody to call back; finger-pointing between companies |
| After the sale | Sales-only outfit, two hours away | Local service department in Ticonderoga, stocked parts, 24/7 no-heat response | Weeks without heat waiting for a part or a callback |
"Typical lower quote" reflects what we most commonly find on competing estimates and on systems we are called to repair. Some contractors include some of these items. Ask for each one in writing.
How to compare estimates fairly
Put every estimate side by side and check for these. If an item is not written down, assume it is not included.
- Is the contractor a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor? If not, the 12-year factory warranty is off the table regardless of the equipment.
- Was a load calculation done, or is the size a guess?
- What is the outdoor unit sitting on, and how high above the snow?
- Is a drain pan heater included? In our climate it should not be optional.
- Is a surge protector included?
- Will the lines be nitrogen-tested and pulled to a measured vacuum?
- How long is labor covered, and is there any comfort guarantee?
- Who files the rebate, and is the price shown with it applied?
- Who installs it, employees or subs, and who services it after?
A lower estimate is only cheaper if nothing ever goes wrong
Take a system quoted a couple thousand dollars below ours. Add one refrigerant leak from a hand-tightened flare (service call plus refrigerant), one control board after a summer storm (covered by nobody), a rusted bracket in year six, and the labor on a single warranty part replacement. The "cheaper" system is now the expensive one, and every one of those calls came on a day you needed heat.
Ours is the price of doing all of that once, on install day, by people who do it every week, in a company that is still going to be at 15 Montcalm Street in twelve years. Because we stand behind the result for 12 years, we have every reason to get it right the first time. A contractor with a one-year labor warranty does not.
It costs more on day one. It costs a lot less by year five.
- Every failure point we have seen on North Country installs is addressed before we leave
- Full 12-year Mitsubishi parts coverage, which only a Diamond Contractor can register
- 12-year labor coverage so a covered repair is $0, not a surprise
- 180-Day Comfort Guarantee on qualifying installs
- NYS Clean Heat and Efficiency Vermont rebates filed for you
- Local crews from Ticonderoga, not a two-hour drive away
Questions homeowners ask when our number is the higher one
Why is your estimate higher than another Mitsubishi Diamond contractor's?
Diamond status means a contractor met Mitsubishi's training and volume requirements. It does not dictate what goes into the installation. The load calculation, the stand and gravel pad, the pan heater, surge protection, proper line sets with nitrogen testing, and the 12-year labor plan are our standards, not Mitsubishi's minimums. Ask the other contractor to list those items in writing and compare again.
Can I get the 12-year Mitsubishi warranty if I buy the equipment online or use a general contractor?
No. The 12-year parts coverage is tied to installation and registration by a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor. Equipment bought online or from an unauthorized seller may carry no factory warranty at all. The same box does not come with the same warranty.
Do I really need a drain pan heater and a surge protector in the Adirondacks?
Yes. The pan heater keeps defrost water from freezing into an ice block under the coil, which is how fan blades and coils get destroyed in a North Country winter. The surge protector guards the inverter and control boards against storm and utility spikes on rural lines, damage no warranty covers.
Can you match a lower price by leaving some of these items out?
We do not sell an installation we would not put in our own homes. What we can do is design the system in stages, a single zone now and more zones later, so the price fits your budget without cutting corners on what is installed. We also offer 18 months of 0% financing through Synchrony.
Does your price include rebates?
Our written estimate shows the price with every NYS Clean Heat or Efficiency Vermont rebate you qualify for already applied, and we file the paperwork. Make sure the other estimates show the same thing. A quote that looks lower before rebates can be higher after.
What if the system does not perform the way you promised?
Qualifying systems we design from a load calculation are covered by our 180-Day Comfort Guarantee. If the system does not keep your home comfortable through its first season, we come back and make it right at our cost.
★★★★★“We had Mark, Rolland, and Matt help get mini splits installed in our first home. They worked with us to make sure we had the right system for our home. This team provided amazing professionalism, customer service, and expertise!”
★★★★★“Been doing business with Gerry and his crew for close to 10 years and always totally satisfied with their product and customer service.”
★★★★★“This is our second Mitsubishi heat pump … to heat the 30x40 insulated metal building with a single head we put up but handles it great. … they had to order and install the system in a little over 2 weeks to get it done by 12/31 to qualify for a large rebate and they got it done.”
