Three things that look like a malfunction and aren't
We get calls every winter from homeowners convinced their heat pump has failed when it's doing exactly what it should. Check these before you worry:
- Steam, a pause, and water under the outdoor unit. That's a defrost cycle. In cold, damp Champlain Valley weather the outdoor coil frosts, and every so often the unit reverses for a few minutes to melt it. The indoor fan pauses so it doesn't blow cold air. Ice that never clears, or a solid block the unit is sitting in, is a different story.
- It runs all the time. An inverter system is supposed to. Unlike a furnace that blasts and shuts off, a Mitsubishi modulates and runs low and steady. Constant quiet operation is efficiency, not a fault.
- The electric bill went down so much you thought it wasn't running. We've had that call. It's running.
Still not right? The Mitsubishi troubleshooter walks you through the remote, the modes and the blink codes before you call.

What a heat pump problem actually looks like
Won't turn on at all
Breaker, disconnect, control wiring or a failed board. Check the breaker once; if it trips again, stop and call.
Runs but the house is cold
Clogged filters are the number-one cause. Then a snow-buried or blocked outdoor unit, then low refrigerant, a dirty coil or a failing reversing valve.
Error code on the unit or app
Mitsubishi units flash a code on the indoor unit light and show it in the Comfort or kumo cloud app. We read it instead of guessing. Some we can resolve remotely.
Outdoor unit iced solid
Defrost that isn't working: a sensor, the reversing valve or the board. Also caused by a unit set on the ground where snow buries it.
Short cycling
On and off every few minutes. Thermostat placement, an oversized system or a sensor fault, all fixable.
Water dripping indoors
A clogged condensate drain or a failed lift pump. Quick fix if you don't wait.
Grinding, squealing, rattling
Fan motor bearings, a bent blade, or a loose panel. Small part now, or a motor later.
Musty smell on startup
Biofilm on the indoor coil or drain pan. A deep clean fixes it, maintenance prevents it. See why it smells.
Higher bills, same weather
A sudden jump without a cold snap means the system is working harder than it should: dirty coils, low charge or a backup heat source running more than it needs to.
Diagnosis with the right tools, parts that keep the warranty
A Mitsubishi inverter system is not a furnace with a different box. Diagnosis means reading the unit's own fault codes, checking inverter output, verifying refrigerant charge by weight and subcooling, and confirming the control settings. A general contractor swapping parts until something works is expensive and often wrong.
- Mitsubishi diagnostic tools and code readouts, not parts-swapping
- Genuine Mitsubishi parts, which keeps the 12-year warranty intact
- Performance test after every repair: charge, airflow and temperatures verified before we leave
- Written price first, approved by you before work starts
- Remote diagnosis where possible through the Mitsubishi Comfort or kumo cloud app on connected systems

The $5,000 rule
Take the age of the system in years and multiply by the repair quote. Under $5,000, repair it. Over $5,000, the money is usually better spent on a new system, especially while NYS Clean Heat rebates and 18-month 0% financing apply to cold-climate heat pumps. A $350 repair on a 5-year-old unit is $1,750: repair. The same $350 on a 15-year-old unit is $5,250: a conversation about a new system.
We show you both numbers. If a Mitsubishi replacement isn't the right fit for the house, we'll say so; we also install RUUD furnaces, boilers, central air and water heaters.
We also repair furnaces, boilers, AC and water heaters
Most houses in the North Country have more than one piece of heating equipment: a heat pump plus the old oil boiler as backup, a propane furnace plus a wood stove. We repair all of it. Gas, propane and oil furnaces, boilers, central and ductless AC, and water heaters, every major brand, including the systems Champlain Valley Heating & Plumbing installed before we took over their building at 15 Montcalm Street.
Other-brand heat pumps (Fujitsu, Daikin, LG and the rest) we diagnose and repair too; parts sometimes have to be ordered. No heat right now? Emergency service is answered 24/7.

Maintenance and the Adirondack Shield plan
Most heat pump repairs trace back to dirty filters, dirty coils and a drain that never got cleaned. Annual ductless maintenance is $169 for the condenser plus $69 per indoor head. The Adirondack Shield Elite Care Plan, from $28 a month for a single zone, covers repairs at $0, includes twice-yearly maintenance and 24-hour priority service, and carries the 12-year parts and labor warranty on our Mitsubishi installs. Book maintenance before the first cold snap.

Heat pump repair questions
My heat pump is running but the house is cold. What should I check first?
Filters first; clogged filters are the number-one cause. Then the outdoor unit: buried in snow, iced over, or blocked by a drift. Then the remote's mode, which is easy to leave in Fan or Dry. If those are clear and it's still short, call us. The troubleshooter on this site walks through the blink codes.
Is it normal for the outdoor unit to steam and stop in winter?
Yes. That's a defrost cycle: the coil frosts in cold damp weather and the unit reverses briefly to melt it. Ice that never clears or a solid block under the unit is a service call.
Should I repair or replace?
Multiply the system's age by the repair cost. Under $5,000, repair. Over $5,000, look at replacement and the NYS Clean Heat rebates that come with a new Mitsubishi system.
Do you repair heat pumps you didn't install?
Yes. Mitsubishi and other brands, ductless and ducted, across our service area. Other-brand parts sometimes need to be ordered.
Can you fix it remotely?
Sometimes. On systems connected to the Mitsubishi Comfort or kumo cloud app we can often read the fault and adjust settings without a visit. If a part has failed, a technician comes out.
What does a diagnostic visit cost?
There's a trip and diagnostic charge for non-plan customers, quoted when you book, and the repair is priced before any work begins. Adirondack Shield Elite customers pay nothing for the visit, parts or labor on covered systems.
Do you offer emergency service?
Yes. (518) 812-1958 is answered 24/7. A live person Mon–Fri 8–5; after hours our assistant takes your details and the on-call office calls back. Shield plan customers get priority.
