How the calculator works

Most homeowners between Lake George and Plattsburgh know roughly what a propane fill or an oil delivery costs and have no idea what their heating adds up to over a year — or what the electricity their old furnace or boiler already burns for its blower, circulator and burner is adding on top. The calculator puts one number on it. You enter your ZIP (which sets the local winter for the model), your home's size and age, what you heat with and roughly what you pay for it, and it estimates your annual heating and cooling cost today. Then it models three Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat options side by side:

  • Single-zone — one outdoor unit and one indoor unit on the hardest-working room, typically the main living area. The lowest-cost entry into heat pump savings; it offsets a share of your fuel use rather than all of it. See ductless mini-splits.
  • 50% hybrid — a system sized to carry about half the home's heating load, which in practice displaces most of the fuel because the heat pump takes the mild and moderate days and the old system only fires on the coldest stretches. A common first step in the High Peaks.
  • Whole-home Hyper-Heat — a cold-climate system sized to your full load with the oil or propane decommissioned. Largest savings, highest NYS Clean Heat tier. See whole-home conversions.

For each you see the yearly operating cost, the electricity added and the fuel removed, what you keep each year and over five years, and charts of where the money goes. The full math — cost per million BTU of delivered heat, efficiency assumptions, CO₂ and sources — is one click away.

Three North Country scenarios

A propane-heated ranch in Crown Point. Propane is among the most expensive fuels per unit of heat, so even the single-zone option shows a meaningful cut, and the whole-home option typically shows the largest annual savings the calculator produces. The report also shows the five-year cost of continuing to fill the tank.

An oil-heated farmhouse in Westport with a wood stove. The 50% hybrid often comes out as the pragmatic choice: the heat pump carries the shoulder seasons and ordinary winter days, the stove covers the deep cold, and the oil deliveries mostly stop. Decommissioning the oil later moves it to the top rebate tier.

A baseboard-heated camp in Hague used year-round. Electric resistance makes one unit of heat per unit of electricity; a Mitsubishi H2i averages about three. The savings show up on the same NYSEG bill, with no fuel deliveries to replace, and the system adds the camp's first air conditioning.

The $250 code

Finish the calculator and the emailed report includes a savings code. Show it to your comfort consultant before your estimate and it comes off your installed price — $250 off. The code is tied to the report and has an expiration date printed on it, so run the calculator when you're within a few months of deciding.

What "cost per MMBTU" means

The fairest way to compare oil, propane, wood, electric baseboard and a heat pump is by what you pay for a million BTUs of heat that actually reaches your rooms, after the equipment's efficiency. A gallon of oil holds a fixed amount of energy, but an older boiler delivers only part of it; a kilowatt-hour through baseboard delivers exactly one kWh of heat; the same kilowatt-hour through a Mitsubishi H2i delivers roughly three. The calculator converts everything to cost per MMBTU delivered so a per-gallon price and a per-kWh rate can be compared honestly. That's why oil and propane homes see the largest savings and why the heat pump still wins at North Country electric rates.

Rebates and financing make the numbers better

The calculator shows operating cost. Installed cost is offset by NYS Clean Heat rebates through NYSEG or National Grid in New York and Efficiency Vermont incentives in Addison County — amounts depend on program and tier, and we confirm your exact figure at the free estimate and file the paperwork. Qualified buyers can also finance at 0% for 18 months, so the project can cash-flow against the fuel bills it replaces. See rebates, financing and the pricing guide.

What the estimate is — and isn't

It's a model built on your inputs, typical regional fuel prices when you don't know yours, and Mitsubishi cold-climate performance ratings. It is not a quote. The firm number comes from a free in-home estimate where we measure the house and run a room-by-room load calculation. Use the calculator to decide whether the conversation is worth having; most homeowners find the answer is less "should I switch?" than "what is waiting costing me?"

Frequently asked questions

Do heat pumps really work in North Country winters?

Yes, when they're cold-climate models. Mitsubishi Hyper-Heating INVERTER systems deliver 100% of rated capacity at 5°F and keep operating to -13°F; H2i Plus and FS-series units run to -22°F. We install them from Ticonderoga to Lake Placid and across Lake Champlain in Addison County.

How much can I save switching from oil or propane?

That depends on your fuel price, home and system size, which is exactly what the calculator estimates. Oil and propane homes typically see the largest savings because those are the most expensive fuels per unit of delivered heat. Whole-home Hyper-Heat usually shows the biggest annual reduction; the 50% hybrid displaces most fuel at a lower installed cost.

Do I have to remove my furnace or boiler?

No. The hybrid scenario keeps your existing system as backup while the heat pump carries most of the load, and the single-zone scenario targets one area. Decommissioning earns the highest NYS Clean Heat tier, and the calculator models all three paths so you can compare.

Is the calculator result a quote?

No. It's a modeled estimate from the information you enter and regional energy prices. A firm quote requires a free in-home visit with a load calculation and a design for your actual house.

Does a heat pump raise my electric bill?

Yes, and the calculator shows by how much next to the fuel bill it removes. For most oil, propane and baseboard homes the added electricity costs well under the fuel it replaces. The report breaks out electricity versus fuel for every scenario.

How do I use the $250 code?

Complete the calculator, open the emailed report, and give the code to your comfort consultant before your estimate. It comes off the installed price of your Mitsubishi system.

“This is our second Mitsubishi heat pump … to heat the 30x40 insulated metal building with a single head we put up but handles it great. … they had to order and install the system in a little over 2 weeks to get it done by 12/31 to qualify for a large rebate and they got it done.”
