How We Install a Mitsubishi Heat Pump in the North Country

From the first walk-through to the 180th day, here is exactly what happens when Adirondack Heat Pumps installs a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat system in Ticonderoga, Lake Placid, Plattsburgh or Middlebury. Eight steps, no surprises: a load calculation, a written design and price with rebates applied, one to three install days by our own crew, and commissioning to Mitsubishi factory spec.

Why the process matters

A heat pump is 50% equipment and 50% installation

Mitsubishi Electric builds the same H2i outdoor unit for every contractor. What separates a system that holds 70°F on a -15°F night in Keene from one that struggles at 10°F is the sizing, the line-set work, the vacuum, the charge and the controls setup. That is why Mitsubishi grades Diamond Contractor ELITE dealers every year and why we follow the same checklist on a one-head camp in Hague as on a seven-zone conversion in Ticonderoga.

The steps below are the same ones our sister crews have refined on Mitsubishi installs since 2013. Nothing is subcontracted.

The eight steps

What a Mitsubishi installation with us looks like

  1. Home evaluation & load calculation

A comfort consultant walks every room, measures, checks insulation, windows and air leakage, looks at your electrical panel and reviews last winter's fuel use. We run a room-by-room heating and cooling load for your town's design temperature — about -10°F in Ticonderoga, colder in the High Peaks. You tell us which rooms are never right.

  2. System design

From the load we pick the outdoor unit capacity, the number of zones, and the indoor style for each one: wall-mounted, floor-mounted, ceiling cassette or ducted. We plan the line-set routing so covers follow your trim, pick a stand or bracket location that stays above the snow line and out of roof drip, and note any electrical work.

  3. Written estimate with rebates applied

You get an itemized price on paper with your NYS Clean Heat (NYSEG or National Grid) or Efficiency Vermont rebate already subtracted, financing options shown, and the warranty spelled out. If you completed the savings calculator first, your $250 code comes off here.

  4. Scheduling & electrical

We order equipment, book your install dates and arrange any panel or circuit work. Most single-zone systems need one new 240V circuit; whole-home conversions sometimes need a panel upgrade, which we identify in step one, not on install day.

  5. Install day(s)

Our crew sets the outdoor unit on a wall bracket or raised stand over a gravel pad, mounts the indoor units, runs line sets inside slim-duct line hide, installs the drain pan heater and a surge protector, nitrogen-pressure-tests the lines, pulls a deep measured vacuum and charges by weight to the line length. One day for single-zone, two to three for multi-zone or whole-home.

  6. Commissioning & app setup

We verify refrigerant charge, airflow, discharge temperature and control settings, set up your MHK2 thermostats or the Mitsubishi Comfort / kumo cloud app on your phone, and walk you through modes, filters and what normal defrost looks like in January.

  7. Warranty registration & rebate filing

We register your equipment with Mitsubishi for the 12-year parts warranty and submit your rebate application with the required documentation. You sign; we do the rest.

  8. 180 days of proof

Our 180-Day Comfort Guarantee covers the first full heating or cooling season. If a zone doesn't hold the temperature we designed it for, we come back and fix it at our cost.

What to expect on install day

How long it takes and what we need from you

  • Single-zone: one day. Crew arrives in the morning; you have heat and cooling by late afternoon.
  • Multi-zone (2–4 heads): usually two days.
  • Whole-home conversion: two to three days, plus any decommissioning of the oil or propane system and tank.
  • Noise and mess: one 3-inch hole per indoor unit, drilled from inside out with a dust shroud. We lay drop cloths and vacuum before we leave.
  • Heat during the job: in winter we sequence the work so your existing heat stays on until the Mitsubishi system is running.

From you we need clear access to the indoor wall locations and the panel, pets secured, and a decision on where you want the outdoor unit if there's more than one good spot. A driveway cleared of snow helps in January.

The load calculation is where the system is won or lost

Square-footage rules of thumb were written for furnaces, which are cheap to oversize. Heat pumps are not. An oversized Mitsubishi short-cycles, costs more up front and dehumidifies poorly in a Lake Champlain August. An undersized one runs wide open on the coldest nights and misses setpoint. Our consultants model each room, then check the result against your real fuel history — if the math says 48,000 BTU and you burned 900 gallons of oil last year, something is off and we find out what before you spend a dollar.

That same calculation is what NYS Clean Heat and Efficiency Vermont require for the whole-home rebate tiers, so getting it right also protects your rebate. Read our load calculation explainer or see how it feeds the free in-home estimate.

Commissioning: the half-day most installers skip

When the last line set is connected, the job isn't done. We nitrogen-test every joint, pull the lines down to a measured vacuum and hold it to prove there's no moisture or leak, then add refrigerant by weight for the exact line length. After startup we log discharge air temperature, check amperage against spec and confirm each indoor unit is addressed correctly on a multi-zone system. Then we set up your controls — wireless MHK2 thermostats, the handheld remotes and the Mitsubishi Comfort app — and show you how to clean a filter.

Commissioning is why our systems can be diagnosed remotely later: Mark, our North Zone consultant, has fixed temperature issues for Ticonderoga customers through the app without a site visit. See controls and apps.

Questions

Installation process questions

How long from estimate to installed system?

Typically two to four weeks once you approve the estimate, depending on equipment availability and the season. Fall is our busiest time; spring and early summer often book faster. When a rebate deadline is in play we have turned systems around in about two weeks.

Do you do the electrical work or do I need my own electrician?

We coordinate all electrical work as part of the job. Most single-zone systems need one dedicated 240V circuit and a disconnect at the outdoor unit. If your panel needs an upgrade for a whole-home conversion, we tell you at the estimate and price it in.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

On a wall bracket or a raised stand over a gravel pad, above the snow line and away from roof drip lines and dryer vents. We look for a spot with short line-set runs, service clearance and minimal visibility from the road or your deck, and we'll show you the options.

Will I be without heat during a winter install?

No. We keep your existing system running until the Mitsubishi system is commissioned, then decommission the old equipment if that's part of the plan. You're never left overnight without heat.

What happens if something isn't right after the install?

Call us. Minor control and setpoint issues can usually be diagnosed remotely through the Comfort app. Anything that needs hands on gets a service visit, and the 180-Day Comfort Guarantee means design-related comfort problems are fixed at our cost.

Do you handle the rebate paperwork?

Yes. We file your NYS Clean Heat or Efficiency Vermont application with the required model numbers, AHRI certificates and photos. You sign the customer portion and we submit everything.

“This is our second Mitsubishi heat pump … to heat the 30x40 insulated metal building with a single head we put up but handles it great. … they had to order and install the system in a little over 2 weeks to get it done by 12/31 to qualify for a large rebate and they got it done.”
