Whiteface cold, ski-rental economics, and no gas line up Route 86
Wilmington is a ski town first. Whiteface draws weekend traffic from December through March, and a large share of the houses along Route 86 and the side roads toward Jay are rentals, second homes or year-round homes that rent out part of the season. The rest is classic Adirondack: riverside camps on the West Branch of the Ausable, fly-fishing cabins, older homes in the hamlet near the Notch, and newer builds up the hills with a view of the mountain.
Wilmington is 75 minutes from Ticonderoga by way of Elizabethtown and Jay, and it is High Peaks cold: -20°F nights every winter and the occasional -30°F. There is no natural gas. Oil and propane do the heating, wood helps, and electric baseboard is common in the smaller camps because it was cheap to install and is now expensive to run.
For a rental, a multi-zone Mitsubishi system changes the math. Each bedroom and the main room get their own thermostat; the owner controls everything from a phone, including a guest lockout; empty rooms stay at 55°F instead of 70°F; and the house has air conditioning for summer mountain-biking season, which more renters expect every year.

Why Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat works in Wilmington
The High Peaks are the hardest heating test in New York State. Nights of -20°F are normal here and -30°F shows up most winters, with a heating season that runs from October into May. Mitsubishi Electric built the Hyper-Heating INVERTER (H2i) line for exactly this: 100% of rated heating capacity at 5°F, continued operation to -13°F on standard H2i equipment, and down to -22°F on the newer H2i Plus and FS-series models we install in Wilmington.
Below those limits the unit does not die; it keeps running at reduced output while the home coasts on stored heat. We size for the coldest realistic night, not the average one, and we tell you straight whether a wood stove or backup makes sense for your house. The inverter compressor modulates instead of cycling on and off, so the system sips power at 20°F and ramps up only when the thermometer dives.

What we install in Wilmington
Most Wilmington homes have no ductwork and no natural gas, so the system we design starts from the rooms you actually live in. Here is what we install most often in Wilmington:
- Multi-zone systems for ski rentals with per-room control, guest lockouts and owner app access
- Riverside camps on the West Branch with freeze alerts and summer cooling
- Whole-home conversions off oil and propane in year-round homes, stove kept for the coldest nights
- Electric baseboard replacements in smaller camps, usually one or two zones
- Floor-mounted units for great rooms with a view of Whiteface
- Repair and maintenance on any brand, grouped with our Lake Placid service runs
Single-zone ductless
One outdoor unit, one indoor unit. The right answer for an addition, a great room, a camp or the one room the furnace never reaches.
Ductless mini-splits →Multi-zone systems
One Hyper-Heat outdoor unit feeding up to 8 indoor units, each on its own thermostat.
Indoor unit styles →Whole-home conversions
Replace the oil or propane boiler as the primary heat source. Ductless zones, a ducted air handler, or both.
Whole-home heat pumps →Ducted air handlers
A Mitsubishi SVZ or PVA air handler drops in where an old furnace was and uses the ducts you already have.
Ducted systems →Repair & maintenance
Mitsubishi-certified service on any brand of heat pump, plus furnaces, boilers and central AC. Flat-rate maintenance pricing posted online.
Heat pump repair →RUUD furnaces, boilers & AC
When a heat pump is not the right fit, we install RUUD propane furnaces, high-efficiency boilers and central air, and hybrid heat-pump water heaters.
Traditional HVAC →Heat pump rebates for Wilmington homeowners
Wilmington is NYSEG territory, which means NYS Clean Heat rebates administered through NYSEG apply to qualifying Mitsubishi cold-climate heat pump installs. Adirondack Heat Pumps is a participating contractor, so the rebate comes off your invoice instead of arriving as a check months later. Homes converting fully off oil or propane generally qualify for the higher tiers; single-zone and partial-home systems qualify for less.
Replacing electric baseboard counts as a conversion under the program, which surprises camp owners who assumed only oil and propane qualified.
Programs and tiers change, so we do not print dollar figures here. We confirm your exact amount at the free estimate and file the paperwork for you. See rebates & savings and financing.
Run your numbers first. Our savings calculator compares your current oil, propane or electric bill against a Mitsubishi system and generates a $250-off code you can use at your estimate.

Heat pump questions from Wilmington homeowners
Can a heat pump keep up at the base of Whiteface?
The Mitsubishi H2i Plus and FS-series units we install in Wilmington operate to -22°F and keep running at reduced output below that. We size for the coldest realistic night and tell you whether a stove or backup still earns its keep in your house. Most do not need it; some older camps do.
I rent my Wilmington house during ski season. What does a heat pump do for me?
Per-room zoning, owner control from your phone, guest lockouts, low-temperature alerts and summer cooling. Most owners see a noticeable drop in heating cost per rented night because empty rooms are no longer heated to 70°F.
Which rebate applies in Wilmington?
NYSEG. NYS Clean Heat rebates through NYSEG apply to qualifying installs, including electric baseboard replacements, and we file them as a participating contractor.
How far are you from Wilmington?
About 75 minutes from Ticonderoga. Estimates are free, there is no travel charge on installs, and we group Wilmington service with Lake Placid.
Can you heat a fly-fishing cabin on the Ausable that has only electric baseboard?
Yes, and that is one of the best-value jobs we do. A single- or dual-zone Mitsubishi system cuts the electric heating cost dramatically, holds the cabin at 50°F while you are away and adds cooling.
