Whitehall heat pump installation

Birthplace of the U.S. Navy, home of a lot of aging oil furnaces

Whitehall is a canal town. The village climbs the hills on both sides of the Champlain Canal and the Poultney River, with 1800s brick and clapboard homes near the Skenesborough waterfront, mill-era houses on the side streets, farms out Route 4 and Route 22 toward Dresden and Granville, and newer homes on the back roads. It is in Washington County, not Essex, and that matters for your utility: Whitehall is National Grid, not NYSEG.

There is no natural gas. Oil is the default fuel here, often in furnaces or boilers that are decades old, with propane and wood behind it. Winter design temperature is about -10°F and the damp cold off the canal and the south end of the lake makes an old house feel colder than the thermometer says. A lot of Whitehall homes do have ductwork from an old oil furnace, which opens up a ducted Mitsubishi air handler as an option alongside ductless zones.

At 30 minutes from Ticonderoga, Whitehall is close. A comfort consultant can be out the same week, and a no-heat call in January is a quick run down Route 22.

Cold-climate performance

Why Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat works in Whitehall

The Champlain Valley is milder than the High Peaks but still serious cold. The design temperature around Whitehall is roughly -10°F, with a few nights most winters that go lower and a damp lake wind that makes old houses feel colder than the number. Mitsubishi Electric Hyper-Heating INVERTER (H2i) equipment delivers 100% of its rated heating capacity at 5°F, keeps operating to -13°F, and the newer H2i Plus and FS-series models run to -22°F. That is a comfortable margin for a Whitehall winter.

The inverter compressor modulates its speed to match the load instead of cycling on and off, which is where most of the efficiency comes from. On a 25°F day the system runs low and quiet; on the coldest night of the year it ramps to full output. We size every system from a room-by-room load calculation, not the square footage on a tax card.

What we install in Whitehall

No two houses around Whitehall are alike, so we do not sell a package. These are the system types we install most often here:

  • Ducted air handlers replacing old oil furnaces in homes that already have ductwork
  • Ductless conversions in village homes with boilers and radiators
  • Farmhouses on Route 4 and Route 22 with a mix of ducted and ductless zones
  • Single-zone mini-splits for additions, apartments and workshops
  • Central air replacements where the old AC has died and a heat pump does both jobs
  • Repair and maintenance on any brand, plus RUUD furnace, boiler and water heater work

One outdoor unit, one indoor unit. The right answer for an addition, a great room, a camp or the one room the furnace never reaches.

Heat pump rebates for Whitehall homeowners

Whitehall is National Grid territory, so NYS Clean Heat rebates run through National Grid rather than NYSEG. The program works the same way: Adirondack Heat Pumps is a participating contractor, the rebate is applied on the invoice, and whole-home conversions off oil, propane or electric baseboard generally qualify for more than a single room.

Whitehall is the first town south of the shop on the National Grid side of the line. We work both programs every week.

Programs and tiers change, so we do not print dollar figures here. We confirm your exact amount at the free estimate and file the paperwork for you. See rebates & savings and financing.

Run your numbers first. Our savings calculator compares your current oil, propane or electric bill against a Mitsubishi system and generates a $250-off code you can use at your estimate.

FAQ

Heat pump questions from Whitehall homeowners

Can you use the ducts from my old oil furnace?

Usually, yes. A Mitsubishi SVZ or PVA multi-position air handler installs where the furnace was and uses the existing ducts. If the ducts are undersized or leaky we tell you, and we can add ductless zones for rooms that never got enough air.

Which rebate applies in Whitehall?

Whitehall is in Washington County and served by National Grid, so NYS Clean Heat rebates run through National Grid. We are a participating contractor and apply the rebate on the invoice.

How far is Whitehall from your shop?

About 30 minutes down Route 22 from Ticonderoga. Estimates are free and service calls are easy to schedule.

Does the damp canal cold hurt a heat pump?

No. Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat units defrost automatically and keep full output at 5°F. We mount the outdoor unit above the snow line on the sheltered side of the house so the damp and the drifts are not an issue.

Do you still install oil or propane equipment?

We install RUUD propane furnaces and boilers when a heat pump is not the right fit, and we service oil equipment of any brand. If your furnace has life left we will say so.
