Mitsubishi M-Series Heat Pumps: The Residential Line We Install
M-Series is Mitsubishi Electric's residential heat pump family — the MSZ wall units, MFZ floor units, MLZ and SLZ cassettes, SEZ ducted units, MUZ single-zone outdoor units and MXZ multi-zone outdoor units that make up nearly every home system Adirondack Heat Pumps installs from Ticonderoga to Lake Placid and across to Addison County. It's the line with Hyper-Heating INVERTER® for -13°F and -22°F operation, Dual Barrier Coating, the 3D i-see sensor and the quietest indoor units in the industry. Here's what's in it and how it's installed.

M-Series, P-Series and CITY MULTI
Mitsubishi Electric sells three families. M-Series is residential: compact, quiet, efficient, up to about 48,000 BTU/h per outdoor unit, with every indoor style a house needs. P-Series is light commercial: larger capacities, longer line lengths, ducted PVA air handlers and PLA/PCA ceiling units for inns, offices and shops. CITY MULTI is the VRF line for buildings — dozens of indoor units on one refrigerant system with central controls. We install all three, but when a homeowner in Crown Point or Westport asks what we're putting in, the answer is almost always M-Series.
- Indoor: MSZ-FS / GL / EF wall, MFZ-KJ floor, MLZ and SLZ cassettes, SEZ short-run ducted, SVZ air handler
- Outdoor single-zone: MUZ-FS (H2i Plus), MUZ-GL, SUZ universal
- Outdoor multi-zone: MXZ-SM Smart Multi and MXZ-C (H2i), two to eight zones
- Controls: remotes, MHK2 thermostat, Mitsubishi Comfort / kumo cloud app

Six things that set the line apart
Hyper-Heating INVERTER
100% of rated capacity at 5°F, operation to -13°F, and -22°F on H2i Plus / FS-series. No strip heat. The reason M-Series works in Essex County. How it works →
Quietest units made
MSZ-GL wall units run at 19 dB on low fan, the lowest in the industry; FS is 20 dB, EF 21 dB. Outdoor units ramp instead of slamming on.
Dual Barrier Coating
On FS-series coils, vanes, ducts and blower wheels, it repels dust and oil film — collecting about a tenth of the dirt of an uncoated unit over ten years — so efficiency holds and cleaning is easier.
3D i-see sensor
FS wall units scan the room for people and surface temperatures and aim air toward or away from them, trimming capacity when the room is empty.
Zone control
Every indoor unit has its own thermostat. Multi-zone MXZ units run up to eight of them on one compressor.
Built to last, backed for 12 years
12-year parts warranty when installed and registered by a Diamond Contractor ELITE; our Elite Care Plan adds 12 years of labor. R-454B refrigerant on 2025+ units.
Cleaner air without buying filters
M-Series indoor units filter in stages. A washable pre-filter catches dust and hair; on wall units a nano-platinum filter uses platinum-ceramic particles to break down odors and bacteria, and a deodorizing or electrostatic stage traps finer particles and pollen. Because the system is ductless there's no duct dust or mold to recirculate, and the coil dries itself after cooling cycles so nothing grows on it. Pull the filters, rinse, dry, reinsert — every month or two in heavy use. Our filter cleaning guide shows how, and the indoor air quality page covers whole-home options.

M-Series single-zone and multi-zone systems
A single-zone M-Series system pairs one MUZ outdoor unit with one indoor unit — the most efficient configuration Mitsubishi makes and the right answer for a camp, an addition or a first step off propane. A multi-zone system puts two to eight indoor units on one MXZ outdoor unit, keeps the outside of the house to one condenser, and is the backbone of whole-home conversions in homes without ducts. Many Ticonderoga designs combine them: a single-zone FS for the main living area plus a Smart Multi for the bedrooms. Read our post on single-zone vs. multi-zone, or see outdoor units.

How we install an M-Series system
- Load calculation. Room-by-room heat loss at your town's design temperature decides outdoor capacity, zone count and indoor sizes.
- Design and estimate. Indoor styles per room, line-set routing, stand or bracket location, electrical, rebates applied — in writing.
- Install. Outdoor unit on a stand or bracket with drain pan heater and surge protection; indoor units mounted; line sets in slim-duct covers; nitrogen test, deep vacuum, weighed charge.
- Commission. Verify charge and airflow, set up thermostats and the app, register the 12-year warranty, file your rebate.

Questions about the Mitsubishi M-Series
What does "M-Series" mean?
It's Mitsubishi Electric's residential heat pump line: the MSZ, MFZ, MLZ, SLZ and SEZ indoor units and the MUZ and MXZ outdoor units. P-Series is light commercial and CITY MULTI is the VRF line for larger buildings.
Is every M-Series unit Hyper-Heat?
No. Hyper-Heating is a feature of specific outdoor units — MUZ-FS, Hyper-Heat MUZ-GL and MXZ H2i models. We specify H2i for every zone that carries winter heat in the North Country.
How long has M-Series been around?
Decades. Mitsubishi has refined the line continuously — higher efficiency, lower noise, better cold-climate performance, Dual Barrier Coating, the i-see sensor and app control — which is why it's the most widely installed ductless line in the region.
Is M-Series only for homes?
Mostly. Small offices, shops and rentals often use M-Series too; larger commercial spaces move to P-Series or CITY MULTI, which we also install.
What warranty does M-Series carry?
A 12-year parts warranty when installed and registered by a Diamond Contractor ELITE like Adirondack Heat Pumps, plus 12 years of labor through our Elite Care Plan, and our 180-Day Comfort Guarantee.
Can I see M-Series units before buying?
Yes. Our Ticonderoga showroom at 15 Montcalm Street has live units running so you can hear them and try the controls.
