Mitsubishi Ceiling Cassettes with Hyper-Heating: Precise Comfort Control from Above

Quick answer: a Mitsubishi ceiling cassette is a recessed indoor unit that heats and cools from the ceiling, with return-air sensors that hold the room at your setpoint and adjustable vanes that send air exactly where it is needed. Paired with a Hyper-Heating outdoor unit it delivers full heat at 5°F and operates to -13°F or -22°F, so it is primary heat for a North Country kitchen, great room or office, not just cooling. The one-way MLZ EZ FIT cassette drops between standard joists for homes; the four-way SLZ and PLA units cover larger open rooms and commercial spaces. Nothing hangs on the wall, and the washable filters pull out from below.

Precise comfort control

Every Mitsubishi cassette carries a return-air sensor that monitors room conditions and automatically adjusts output to maintain the temperature you choose. Because the unit sits in the center of the ceiling rather than on one wall, it distributes air evenly across the room, and because the vanes are individually adjustable, you can direct air toward the seating area in winter and away from it in summer. Four-way units throw air in four directions for large rooms; the one-way EZ FIT aims a single stream, ideal for a kitchen, bedroom or hallway. The inverter compressor outdoors modulates continuously so the room holds one temperature rather than swinging.

The cassette lineup

ModelStyleBest for
MLZ EZ FITOne-way, fits between 16-inch joistsHomes: kitchens, bedrooms, rooms with no free wall; no soffit or structural work
SLZCompact four-way, about two feet squareResidential great rooms, offices, finished basements with a drop or framed ceiling
PLAFull-size four-wayLarge open rooms, restaurants, retail, hotel rooms; see commercial HVAC

All three connect to the same Hyper-Heating single-zone or multi-zone outdoor units as wall and floor units, so a cassette in the kitchen can share an outdoor unit with a wall unit in the living room and a floor unit in the sunroom. See ceiling-mounted units.

Indoor air quality

Instead of buying replacement filters several times a year, Mitsubishi indoor units use washable filters that are easy to access, remove and reinsert; on a cassette the grille drops down and the filter slides out. You will never be caught without a filter. Multi-stage filtration catches dust, pollen and pet dander in the room the unit serves, and because there are no ducts, there is no duct run collecting dust between the equipment and the room. Cleaning instructions are in our filter guide, and whole-house options on the air filtration page.

Remote control and remote operation

Several controller options let you program the system around your life: a handheld remote, an MHK2 wireless wall thermostat, or the Mitsubishi Comfort app on a phone or tablet. With the app, a cassette in a Lake George camp can be held at 50°F all week and brought up to 70°F from the car on Friday. Gone for the day or on vacation, you will never return to a house that is freezing or stifling. Our office can also read status and error history remotely to help diagnose a problem without a visit. See controllers.

Controlled airflow

Send the air where you need it most. On four-way units each vane can be set individually, so a PLA over a restaurant dining room can close the vane that blows on the table by the window and open the one toward the kitchen pass. On the EZ FIT the single vane sweeps or holds. That is a level of control a ducted register never offered.

Hyper-Heating from the ceiling

Ceiling cassettes are often thought of as cooling equipment because of their commercial roots. On a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heating outdoor unit they are full cold-climate heat: 100% of rated capacity at 5°F, operation to -13°F on standard H2i and -22°F on H2i Plus. Warm air from a ceiling unit is aimed down by the vanes so it does not stratify. Learn how the technology works on our Hyper-Heat page.

Installation notes for Adirondack homes

An EZ FIT cassette needs about a foot of clearance above the ceiling between joists, which most first-floor ceilings with a basement or second floor above provide. Four-way units need more depth and suit drop ceilings, framed soffits or commercial spaces. The condensate drain is pumped or gravity-fed to the outdoors, and the line set runs through the ceiling cavity, so nothing shows but a flat grille. Cassettes qualify for NYS Clean Heat rebates through NYSEG and National Grid like any other Hyper-Heat indoor unit, and they carry the same 12-year parts warranty on Diamond Contractor ELITE installs. Frequently asked questions

Can a Mitsubishi ceiling cassette heat a room in winter?

Yes. On a Hyper-Heating outdoor unit a cassette delivers 100% of rated heating capacity at 5°F and operates to -13°F, or -22°F on H2i Plus. The vanes aim warm air downward so it does not collect at the ceiling.

Will a ceiling cassette fit in a normal house ceiling?

The one-way MLZ EZ FIT is designed to fit between standard 16-inch joists with about a foot of depth, so it works in most first-floor ceilings. Four-way units need more depth and suit drop ceilings or framed soffits.

How do you clean the filter on a ceiling cassette?

The grille drops down on hinges, the washable filter slides out, and you vacuum and rinse it. Monthly in heavy-use seasons, at least every three months otherwise.

Can a cassette share an outdoor unit with wall units?

Yes. Cassettes connect to the same single-zone and multi-zone Hyper-Heating outdoor units as wall and floor units, so you can mix styles room by room on one system.
